The Great War Scrapbook of Laura Morse

The scrapbook was composed by Laura Morse. who was born in 1878 at Ruspidge, the only surviving child of Annie and Stephen Yemm.

She composed a scrapbook of all the local young men, who were killed in the Great War of 1914 - 1918 by collecting the obituaries from the local paper the "Forest Mercury". It consists mainly of obituaries of young men who were killed in the Great War of 1914-1918. Most of them were in the 13th 'Forest of Dean' battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment.

Laura's grandparents, John and Elizabeth Edwards came up from Wales in 1841. John was an engineer with Henry Crawshay, known as the iron kings of Merthyr Tydfil. They were renowned as the greatest iron producing centre in the world. They came up to the Forest of Dean, bringing young men with them, firstly for the iron, and later opened the Forest Collieries, building rows of houses in Buckshaft, White Hart Hill and Valley Road.

Laura married Richard Morse, also from Ruspidge, he was born at the "Victoria", Lower Ruspidge, a well known off-licence, store and coach house. He was one of six sons and four daughters, and he worked as a foreman at Lightmoor Colliery. Richard and Laura had three daughters and one son, May, Ethel, Richard and Eva.
