Thanks Jeff, that gives me plenty to look into. I wonder if Cowper was Scottish? My Dad thinks we may have come from Scotland but I cannot find any link. DNA shows from Northern Europe. We have a tradition of naming eldest son John, William or Thomas so it goes back to at least 1581!
