Griffiths/Horlicks Ruardean (General)

by Carol Griffiths @, Sunderland, Monday, October 24, 2005, 13:19 (6762 days ago)

Ok folks, I have to ask have I married into part of the Horlicks empire!

Ive just been reading about Priscilla Griffiths of Ruardean marrying James Horlick and so the dynasty commenced.

i got the info from http://www.jansdigs.com/Racine/bellewhorlick.htm

Ive found a Priscilla on IGI baptised 04/05/1817 Ruardean, parents John and Margaret.

Does anyone know anything about them?

Carol

Priscilla HORLICK ( nee Griffiths) 1817 Ruardean

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Monday, October 24, 2005, 13:54 (6762 days ago) @ Carol Griffiths

James Horlick (1844-1921) amassed a fortune in the United States of America from a malted milk drink bearing his surname and was given a baronetcy in 1914.

From: 'Ruardean', A History of the County of Gloucester: Volume 5: Bledisloe Hundred, St. Briavels Hundred, The Forest of Dean (1996), pp. 231-47.

The Horlick family, notably James and William became famous for the method of producing dried milk with added malt - later to become world famous. The original malting shed still stands in Ruardean, a small stone building behind the Malt Shovel public house, although it may shortly be removed and rebuilt on a different site in the village.

William Penn - Does anyone know whether this Penn family are related to William Penn (of Pensylvannia fame!) who attended Arch-bishop Harsnet School in Chigwell ? The Master of the school was Mr Burford.

Thanks everyone for the wealth of info, which apart from telling me the Horlicks fortune may not be within my grasp, but hey, you never know:), is helping me sort out the Griffiths families of Ruardean.

I can see Geoge Griffiths and Sarah were the parents of John Griffiths. IGI has a George Griffiths born around 1750 marrying a Sarah Brain in Ruardean. Its not in capitals so I understand thatit may not be definate.

I need to find out who were Georges parents, surely if I go back far enough I will get a connection:)

Thanks again everyone.

I have the following marriage recorded in my Ruardean database which I am busy compiling:

GRIFFITHS George married BRAIN Sarah on 18-Feb 1775 at Ruardean by Banns
source: Bishops Transcripts

There is no sign of a baptism for a George GRIFFITHS around 1750 at Ruardean.

William HORLICKFeb 23rd 1846 - 1936
food manufacturer, philanthropist, b. Ruardean, Gloucestershire, England.

He was educated in private schools, served several years as an apprenticed harness maker, and in 1869 migrated to the U.S. and to Wisconsin, where he settled in Racine. In 1873 he moved to Chicago where, with his brother, James, he began the manufacture of food products.

The brothers came from a family of nine children in Ruardean where their [grand] father [?] John was minister of the non conformist chapel between 1801 and 1861.

In 1876, when the company moved to Racine, William Horlick began to experiment with the possibility of creating a dried-milk product. In 1887 his efforts succeeded when he produced dried milk combined with an extract of malted barley and wheat; the product was registered under the trademark of Malted Milk. The success of this product, which reduced milk to a powdered form that could be easily stored and transported, gave Horlick a national and world market.

In 1889 a branch of the company was opened under James Horlick in New York City, and in 1890 a branch was established in England. New plants, constructed at Racine in 1902 and 1905, reflected William's taste for English architectural style. In 1906 the firm name was changed from Horlick's Food Co. to Horlick's Malted Milk Co., with William Horlick serving as treasurer until his brother's death in 1921, at which time he became president.

The success of the company enabled William Horlick to achieve a widespread reputation as a philanthropist in the Racine area, and he also contributed financially to the first Byrd expedition to the South Pole and the Amundsen expedition to the North Pole.

COWLEY Manor near Cheltenham was from 1895 to 1928 home to James Horlick, co-founder with his brother William of the Horlicks Malted Milk Company.

James Horlick married into my Burford family. He married Margaret Adelaide Burford in 1873. The children I have so far for them are :Ernest Burford Horlick,James Nockells Horlick,Gerald Nolekin Horlick. I'd be interested to know if there is any other info about Mr Nockells around. I now have the Nockells name linked to my Burford family in Stratford Essex, London & Pendle Hill Lancs, along with the Horlick links. I'm guessing he must have been a firm family favourite for some reason or another.

wow thanks for all this information. Its the Nockells bit that has me the most frustrated at the moment I had pieced together where the Nolekens name came into it & of course the Burford name but cant seem to track down a direct link with the surname of Nockells. Its such an unusual name & I have spotted it in a couple of co-incidental bits e.g A Mr Nockells was a cloth factor in London to John Bury's company who was the brother in law of John Burford. There is also a William Nockells a coal merchant and Oxalic Acid Manufacturer, and my Burford's are also living in Stratford. So as you can see its interesting the name then turns up again with the James Horlick whose mother is a Burford

by rowandean, Monday, January 14, 2008, 00:37 (5950 days ago) @ Carol Griffiths

Hello Carol

I have to ask this, although you may not be the person I think. Are you the Carol Griffiths who moved from Exeter to Sunderland? My roots are in the Forest of Dean. The whole of my family and my husband are Foresters.

By the way I went to school with Michael Horlicks and knew his father, George. I believe they are related to the above family.

Look forward to a reply.

Regards

Margaret Baldwin
