Hi Alf

I have begun trying to work out my family ancestry from the Forest of Dean area. My mother was Betty Beard and her father Joseph Beard came from Coldharbour (Oxenhall) near Newent. I have traced back my grandfather's ancestry via another Joseph and two John Beards.

Anyway, I've seen your name appear on information associated with the Oxenhall and Newent areas and churches elsewhere on the internet, so thought I'd make contact.

Hi Alf,
Thanks for all the work you do on the BEARD family, I'm pretty much a beginner, but gradually becoming hooked! It's slow work though, living in Western Australia, but I'm a game girl!
My father was Stanley Silvey Beard,b 1897, son of Thomas Edwards Beard b1835 and Mary Ann Silvey b1837.
Plenty of people seem to have details of Samuel Beard b1829, but not much on T.E.
However... I went to Northam W.A. and found gravestones in an old cemetry which may be of some interest:-
In loving memory of
CORNELIEUS BEARD
Born in Gloucestershire England 1830
and departed this life on May 28th 1900
aged 70 years then the following...
Cornelieus beard it was my name,
and Northam was my station,
Heaven is my dwelling place,
and Christ is my salvation.

Now I am dead and in my grave,
and all my bones are rotten,
this little verse will tell my name,
when I am quite forgotten.

Erected by his loving wife Mary Beard and children.
--------------------
In same plot was
Sacred to the memory of
SARAH BEARD
the beloved wife of
CORNELIS BEARD
who died on the 21st March 1884
aged 55 years

Deeply regretted by her sorrowing husband, family and friends.

Hope this will be of interest.
regards, Varian

Thomas Edwards BEARD 1835 - 1900 Lydney

Thanks again for all the info. MUCH appreciated.Sorry for tardy reply.
I took photos of the Cornelius Beard gravestones, so if anyone is related and wants photos I can send them.
In the thread I see ref. to "trowmen", (in the words of an infamous Aussie politician) "Please explain"!! Have no idea what it means.
cheers,

A trow was a type of cargo boat found in the past on the River Severn in Great Britain and used to transport goods. The mast could be taken down so that the trow could go under bridges, such as the bridge at Worcester and the many bridges up and downstream. The mast was stepped in a three sided frame open at the rear but closed with an iron pin or rope lashing. From the top of the mast a forestay ran down to the bow winch. To lower the mast the pin was removed and the winch slackened off to let the mast fall towards the stern. The reverse operation pulled the mast up.

One such Trow, called "Joan", was owned by a timber merchant called Oliver Luff. He used her to bring timber from Tintern, Monmouthshire into 'The Back' now called 'Welsh Back' in Bristol's Floating Harbour, where he owned two timber yards. A pub, the Llandoger Trow is situated in Bristol. Trows were sea-worthy, as with an added keel they could take 90 tons of salt from Droitwich to France across the English Channel. The flat bottomed Trows sailed on the sea by hauling a twenty foot log of wood under the hull strapped with chains to give 'grip' and stop the hull sliding sideways.

The Ship Inn sign at Brimscombe featuring a Severn Trow There are two traditional types of Severn Trow. Prior to the 1840s the River Severn was tidal up to Worcester. The trows that were used on the tidal portion of the River were called Downstream Trows whilst those that sailed north of Worcester were called Upstream Trows and were smaller. An example of a Downstream Trow, the Spry, is at the Blists Hill site of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums. During the summer the flow of water was often very low and so the trows were pulled over the resultant shallows. A rope was attached to the mast and the men who pulled the boats were called bow hauliers. The men would enter into a contract with the captain of the trow in the many pubs which were all along the Severn riverbanks and there was a right of way along the bankside.

BTW it sounds like Crow i.e Tro

WOW! Thanks so much..that's great.
Whilst the Beard side of my family were slaving away in the tinplate factories, the Silvey and Hyett menfolk were listed as "waterman" and "master mariner".
So now I guess I have some idea what they did.

Not sure how true it is for the Wye but as a generalisation watermen on the Severn were the crew of a vessel. The master mariner would have been the captain or trowman.

The Beards from the Severn Gorge regularly sailed to Bristol down the Severn. Several appear in the Gloucester Port Books. Suggest that anyone searching for a missing Beard should look at all the river ports especially Worcester, Broseley etc.

I noticed a William Beard, owner and occupier of a house in Soudley listed under the Duties on Land Values, Finance Act 1910. There's also a large scale OS map with all property numbers annotated (3469 in this case). The maps are in a separate building in Gloucester from the Glos. Cnty. Records and the Public Library.

There was also a Gilbert Beard in Soudley in the 1990's.

My post of 09/11/2009 "Sterrey, 29 Albert Street, Lydney" mentions Harold Beard, his wife Florence ("Flo") nee Salcombe, and their Son Peter Thomas Beard. Anecdotally, I understand Peter married a Josy Read.

I haven't been able to find any other related Beards or further information on those just mentioned apart from one suggestion of a death, but in Summer 2007 I noted the grave in St Mary's churchyard, Lydney, of Albert Beard who died aged 88 (I think it says) in 1960.

I have a recollection from childhood, probably from the early to mid 1950s, that the above Harold Beard featured in a piece in the Lydney Observer, a copy of which was posted to my parents in London. Somebody did recently have a rummage in the newspaper archives at Cinderford Library, but without finding such an item.

Hi Alf,

I'm from the Northam Beards who moved from Tetbury to Northam, Western Australia in Aug 1857. There were two brothers Cornelius (my great grandfather) and Moses with their wives. I have records of about 1000 to 1500 of their decendants however are keen to know more about their ancestors from Tetbury.

I have been involved with geneolgy research of the Beards for about 20 years

Happy to provide my direct email address however not sure if it is allowed.

Regards

Chris
