You can do this for yourself by using the parish records - his baptism is there, that will give you his parents, and then look up the marriage of his father, which will give you the maiden name of his wife.

Thank you for your kind help.

My Grandparents left The Forest during the 1926 strike.

My Grandmother's parents were Levi and Elizabeth WILCE so I have found your message board extremely helpful.

Levi Wilce, the owner and occupier of the Jovial Colliers, was also one of the biggest land owners in Cinderford in late Victorian / early Edwardian times. He was listed as a butcher and farmer in 1894 and a timber merchant and farmer in 1902 There was once a timber yard on the site of Lidl supermarket in the High Street operated by Levi Wilce and the turn of the last century the timber yard employed at least 50 men. Levi Wilce was grossly obese weighing 22 stones. When he died in 1912 it required nine pall bearers to carry his coffin. He was only in his 50’s.

Pte Ernest E Wilce

Following on the fact that another son to
whom reference with a photo was made in
these columns a few weeks ago had been
missing at the front and little hope remained
of his being alive the sad news has recently
been received by Mrs Wilce , Belle Vue Road
Cinderford that her son Ernest has been killed.
The information was contained in the follow
ing letter :-

" Dec 7th 1917

Dear Madam

I very much regret to inform you that your son
Ernest was killed by shell fire on November 27th
last. He was in action and attached to the machine
gunners at the time. I have lost a very good soldier.

He was my orderly at one time and I found him
very brave and very willing. His death was instantaneous
I am having all his effects packed up and returned
to you.

Again expressing my deepest sympathy

C Aubry Hall, Capt. "

Pte Wilce attached to the Coldstream
Guards would have attained the age of 20 on
December 3rd 1917. He was a smart young
fellow and bid fair to become a successful
young man of business. He was the son of the
late Mr Levi Wilce. Four other brother
are now serving in the Kings forces. His
mother and other relatives have teh deepest
sympathy of our readers in this added sorrow.
Mrs Wilce has now received an official com
munication to teh effect that no further news
having been received relative to her son Pte
Sidney Wilce Worcestershire Regiment who
has been missing since Novemeber 5th 1916 the
Army Council have been regretfully constrained
to conclude that he is dead. This is the other
on referred to above

Thirteen months have now elapsed since the
official news first arrived that 40216 lance Corpl
J S Wilce son of the late Mr Levi Wilce and
of Mrs Wilce of Belle Vue Road was wounded and missing
Every possible inquiry has been made but no
information of any kind has since reached his
friends to show either that he was killed or
that he was taken prisoner. In one of the
notices it was mentioned " No hospital stated"
The absence of the ordinary intimation
generally sent in about 12 months more or less
assuming his death has not yet arrived. This
has given his friends a slender hope but there.....

Feb 21st 2018 from The Forester
BRITAIN’S longest serving councillor Lloyd Wilce died yesterday at his Cindeford home at the age of 89.
Mr Wilce, of Woodgate Road, entered the world of politics on returning from national service in 1949. He started out as a councillor at the Plump Hill for 18 months before becoming a councillor in his hometown.
Mr Wilce told The Forester in 2015 that one of his best moments was fundraising money for the town’s swimming pool.
He said: “I saw how they had play areas and swimming pools along with many other things that Cinderford didn’t have. I wanted to make the town better for the people.

Despite his grandfather Levy Wilce being one of the richest men in the Forest and a staunch Conservative, Mr Wilce joined the Labour Party. He said at the time: “My father’s side of the family were Conservatives. My grandfather at the time was probably the richest man in Cinderford. “However, my father died in 1942. I was only 12 at the time and all the properties my father owned went back to the family and all my mum was left with was 30 ‘bob’ and her pension.”

Mr Wilce once gained more votes in Cinderford than one of the Parliamentary candidates in the whole constituency. Having considered calling it a day in 2015, Mr Wilce stood and was elected for the town council elections with 464 votes.

From the Mirror 20 May 2015
Britain's longest-serving councillor has been re-elected after 66 YEARS - and he thinks Andy Burnham will be the next Labour leader.
Labour's Lloyd Wilce, 86, is still on Cinderford Town Council in Gloucestershire after colleagues 'twisted his arm' to continue the job he's had since 1949. After attending his first council meeting since the election, he's told Mirror Online he thinks you can't always rely on politicians anymore.
Since Lloyd was first elected his authority has changed names three times. But he said: "Well, I've done it for so long, and they said 'you might as well keep going' so I carried on." Lloyd started his political career and affiliation with the Labour Party aged 16, when he joined the Labour League of Youth and became their regional chairman.

His involvement was furthered when he came out of the army in 1949 and stood as a Labour candidate in his local council, in the Forest of Dean.He said: "I came out of the army and realised Cinderford was lacking certain things - a swimming pool for example - and that's why I wanted to get involved."I've been quite successful with a lot of things. We got a swimming pool!"

Lloyd says his biggest achievements are fighting for the pool and a running track. He also helped raised £20,000 for a statue of a well-known coal miner in the centre of his hometown.
When asked about how he feels on the state of politics today, he said: "You can't always rely on politicians!""The last general election was a weird affair. The predictions seemed to change all of a sudden."

Lloyd is widowed, but was married to wife Mary for 60 years. He has 2 sons, 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He says his offspring won't be continuing his political legacy, as a lot of them moved out of the area for university or jobs.He first worked in Debenhams when he left the army then ran a pub with Mary, The Old Engine Inn, for 25 years before he retired.

Lloyd was a top middle distance runner in the army, but today his interests outside of local politics lie in voluntary work and helping out the community.Tapping into his interest in community spirit, Lloyd also served a period as Mayor of Cinderford 10 years ago.Lloyd says that his long career has been tough and rewarding."I've given up so much for the role," he said."I thought, 'I've done enough.' Then I thought again and said, 'well, I might as well just carry on.'"

Regarding Levi Wilce, and his son Tom, who owned the Timber yard which later became Cinderford bus station and now Lidl supermarket. I've just found this entry in the Grace's Directory.

According to his grandson's obituary;

“My father’s side of the family were Conservatives. My grandfather (Levi) at the time was probably the richest man in Cinderford."

Levi and his descendants owned several shops in the town throughout the C20th.

Milson HARRIS

by jimashton @, Friday, January 30, 2009, 05:48 (5568 days ago) @ erin

Hi Erin

I have already replied to your other posting for this family "Abiah Harris nee Baldwin" dated 26 January.

I was intrigued by this thread, in particular the reference to the Wilce family, as I have 153 of them in my family tree. You say your grandparents were Levi & Elizabeth Wilce. As Reporter has suggested, you can check Parish Records on this site, indeed Slowhands has already shown quite a number for you.

I decided to check if Levi & Elizabeth Wilce have any connection to my Wilce's, but to no avail. I did however find 2 items of interest to you, which can be found within the Parish Records :
Baptism: Levi Wilce 29 May 1853 Ruardean parents Thomas Wilce & Selina
Marriage: Thomas Wilce Collier Full Age, to Selina Wilce Bootmaker Full Age Spinster 17 December 1842 Ruardean.

From my own records :

1851 Census East Dean
HARRIS Milsom 40 Coal Miner East Dean
Abiah Wife 42 East Dean
Abiah 12 Scholar East Dean
Cornelius 10 Scholar East Dean
Thomas 8 Scholar East Dean
Lucy 7 Scholar East Dean

1861 Census East Dean
Mildon Harris 55 Coal Miner East Dean
Abia 52 East Dean
Lucy 17 teacher East Dean

I would be interested to learn the link between Milson Harris & Abiah nee Baldwin and Levi Wilce & Elizabeth Bradley.

Milson and Abiah HARRIS (nee BALDWIN) had a son Thomas HARRIS who was married to Elizabeth HARRIS (nee BRAIN).

Their son Arthur HARRIS was married to Tryphena WILCE who was the daughter of Levi WILCE and Elizabeth WILCE (nee BRADLEY).
