No dates or places ... so a guess to get us going

Whilst scanning for the Mathern Watkins earlier , William Tuffley caught my eye. Seems he came from Ashelworth and lived next door to a Hyett in 1881.

Vine Family - Chepstow

by barbarajane smith, Tuesday, January 10, 2006, 03:27 (6684 days ago) @ JaneWatkins

My Grandfather, Walter Morgan Vine was born in the Shrewsbury area. He met my grandmother Ada while visiting his grandmother in Chepstow. Her full name was Ada Cambridge. They settled in Lydney and had 5 children, 3 sons, Walter Robert (my father), Vernon and Lawrence and 2 daughters, Doreen (Elway) and Barbara (Lucan) I'm not sure of the order but I believe Doreen was the eldest. My mother also recalls a cousin who married a Mayo who was caretaker of Chepstow Castle.

Ada Cambridge had 2 brothers and 1 sister that I know about. 1 brother was a male hairdresser in Lydney, the other committed suicide rather than return to active service during WW2. He hung himself in the attic of a house in Forest Road, and remained there for several days before he was found. Her sister Rose married a Thorn(e)

William TUFFLEY / SMITH - 1856 Ashleworth

by tuffers64, Cinderford, Friday, March 31, 2017, 11:38 (2586 days ago) @ slowhands

William Tuffley is my Great Grandfather, who drowned in the River Severn in 1902. He was a nasty piece of work and was either fined or spent time in prison for either stealing, fighting, drunk, poaching and being a general nuisance. He even beat up his father-in-law Richard Hyett and put him in hospital. There was the start of a county court case which was adjourned as Richard was not able to attend the case. As far as I can make out Richard would not press the charges that the Police wanted to bring ( I can't say I blame him)
A relative recently told me that they must have put out the bunting in the village of Ashleworth when William Tuffley was dragged out dead at Ashleworth Quay
However, Richard Hyett was not much better as he spent time in Glos Prison for stealing some cross-cut saws from an auction and getting drunk.
Their story is worthy of a TV series

Bailey - Vine

In my search I have found reference to William Edward BAILEY VINE who's father I believe is CHARLES VINE, born / baptised 23/5/1847 Staunton (living at Snigs End which is on the border of Corse and Staunton).

Charles Vine was the son of William Vine (b.1800/3 Eldersfield) and Elizabeth , known as Betty,(b.1800/2). Charles siblings were William, Sarah and James born Eldersfield (Census records).

In 1881 Census, Charles lived with his mother Betty Vine together with a boarder Jane Bayley and her children Sophia, Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, Louisa, Charles and William all born in Staunton except for William (whom I believe was baptised at Newent Union Workhouse 5/3/1881).

It is not known as to whether Bailey was Jane's maiden or married name. Jane is recorded as being born in Tirley but there is no evidence to confirm this. My theory is that Jane's husband either deserted her or died in 1880/1 and Jane found herself briefly in Newent Union Workhouse.

In 1891 Census, Charles and Jane are now recorded as husband and wife, Jane's children Lucy(Louisa) and William are now named as Vine and not Bailey, Charles and Jane now have further children Rose, Sophia, Agnes and Albert.

Jane died aged 42 and was buried at Corse parish church 28/9/1897 but is recorded as Jane Bailey, and listed as another surname in paratheses after Bailey is the name VINE. This seems to indicate that Charles and Jane were not legally married but lived as man and wife.

Parish records for the following marriages provides further evidence of this relationship:-

Albert Edward Baily (21) married 1909 Hasfield Annie M Cross (Albert's father being Charles Vine)

Sophia Ellen Bailey (29) married 1902 Hasfield Charles Bayliss (Sophia's father being Charles Vine)

Louisa Bailey (23) married 1899 Hasfield John Gauge Didcote (Louisa's father being Charles Vine

I have seen the children born Bailey recorded as being Bailey, Bailey Vine, or just Vine. The explanation of the relationship between Charles and Jane is a mystery.

Trust this provides some direction for your search for Vine family.
