WATKINS / WHITE (General)

I have Ann WHITE born abt 1832 the daughter of William WHITE & Mary BENNETT. She was bapt. in Abenhall in 1832. In the 1871 census for East Dean I have found William & Ann WATKINS and family on the same page as William & Mary WHITE. Ann WATKINS is listed as 39 years old born in East Dean. I am thinking she is William & Mary's daughter. I can't seem to find anything that will prove it though. Any ideas? Thanks.

1871 census for the White's is The Plump - assume correct family

I see that you have raised this on the Gloucestershire List and I have responded as follows:

This is a transcript of the 1871 Census entry for the Watkins Family:
The Plump, East Dean, Westbury on Severn, Gloucestershire, England
Household Members
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
William Watkins Head - Male 58 1813 - Glamorgan, Wales
Ann Watkins Wife - Female 39 1832 - Gloucestershire, England
Mary Watkins Daughter - Female 19 1852 - Gloucestershire, England
Elizabeth Watkins Daughter - Female 17 1854 - Gloucestershire, England
James Watkins Son - Male 13 1858 - Gloucestershire, England
Henry Watkins Son - Male 11 1860 - Gloucestershire, England
Abiah Watkins Daughter - Female 6 1865 - Gloucestershire, England

Looking at the 1861 Census we find this family also at Plump Hill:
1861 Census
Plump Hill, East Dean, Westbury on Severn, Gloucestershire, England
Household Members
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
Ann Davis Head Married Female 29 1832 Charwomen East Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Lea M H Davis Daughter - Female 10 1851 - East Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Elizabeth E Davis Daughter - Female 8 1853 - East Dean, Gloucestershire, England
James Davis Son - Male 6 1855 - East Dean, Gloucestershire, England
George Davis Son - Male 4 1857 - East Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Henry Davis Son - Male 2 1859 - East Dean, Gloucestershire, England

The Gloucestershire BMD website at http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/MainMenu.aspx provides Mother's maiden name in Birth entries and we have the following:
Child Surname Child Forename Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
DAVIS Elizabeth WHITE 1854 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 15 79
DAVIS James WHITE 1856 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 16 451
DAVIS George WHITE 1858 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 18 404
DAVIS Henry William WHITE 1860 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 20 417
DAVIS Abiah WHITE 1865 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 25 411

Next is to find a DAVIS/WHITE marriage and we find this entry:
Name: Henry Davis
Gender: Male
Marriage Age: Full age
Occupation: Painter
Event Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 11 Sep 1852
Marriage Place: Leckhampton, St Peter, Gloucestershire, England
Father: William Davis
Spouse: Ann White a Minor
Father of Spouse: William White, Farmer
(Image of the Marriage Register entry is available on Ancestry)

Given it is in the Cheltenham area and out of the Forest of Dean one may not be convinced it is Ann White from Plump Hill however when we search for Ann in the 1851 Census we find this entry:
Gateway House, 11, High Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England
Household Members
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
Thomas Higgs Head Married Male 71 1780 Proprietor Of Houses Gloucestershire, England
Mary Higgs Wife Married Female 50 1801 - Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England
Sarah Freeman Sister-In-Law Married Female 54 1797 Assistant In The House Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England
Ann White Servant Unmarried Female 18 1833 House Maid Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England
Eliza Yates Servant Unmarried Female 16 1835 General Sevt Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

Finally as Ann is living with William Watkins on 1871 we assume her husband Henry has either died or split from the family. This entry is in the Burial Register for Abenhall:
Year: 1860
Month: Jun
Day: 17
Surname: DAVIS
Forenames: Henry
Residence: East Dean
Age_at_death: 30
Officiating_Minister: J. Davies
Event: Burial
Cause_of_death:

Register_Reference: P1 IN 1/11
Page_No: 56
Parish_Chapel: Abenhall
