Looking for my great grandfather - Any Ideas? (General)

by saralarasdog, Saturday, May 01, 2010, 02:53 (5081 days ago)

I've been looking for my great grandfather with no luck. He was born out of wedlock in or around 1860. I can't find a baptism for him anywhere. I know he was born in the Forest of Dean but I can't find anything more specific than that. I got his birthplace from the Family Serch Records (from a census record when he was in his 20's and then living in Yorkshire). His marriage cert. only says Forest of Dean as well. I'm under the impression that he was Catholic as my grandmother was Catholic. His wife was also Catholic but unfortunately, she was Irish and her information was lost in the great fire. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go from here?

Looking for my great grandfather - Any Ideas?

Telling us the names of your great grandfather and his mother would be the first idea that comes to mind. We could then try and come up with something for you.

Second idea, have you searched for his baptism in the Parish Records section of this Web site?

Third idea, give us more details of what is on his marriage certificate. Where was he married, is there anything listed in the fathers name section? Where on the marriage certificate is the reference to the Forest of Dean, is it his place of residence?

The more relevant details you share with us the easier it will be to help you. Reading our Posting Guidelines will assist you.

Looking for my great grandfather - Any Ideas?

Hi Admin,
I have my great-grandfather's marriage cert. in my hands. His mother is not named on this. His father's name is George Smedley and I have found reference to a George Smedley in Parkend. The records show that George marries a lady called Caroline Griffiths a year before my great-grandfather is born. This Caroline is from Yorkley. My grand mother (so my great-grandfather's daughter) is also called Caroline. I still have not located his birth, so I can't be sure that this George is his father. The marriage cert. has him living in Yorkshire by then (at age 24). Hubert (my great-grandfather) is listed as a coal miner and so is George. Any ideas of where to go from here? The birth cert. just doesn't seems to be anywhere.

Hubert GRIFFITHS / SMEDLEY 1860 - 1922

by saralarasdog, Tuesday, May 25, 2010, 20:41 (5056 days ago) @ slowhands

Hi Slowhands,
Thank you Slowhands!! So, I guess I couldn't find him as he was baptised GRIFFITHS. Some of the census isn't quite right (i.e. my grandmother was born in 1899 and James wasn't a son of Hubert's). My Grandmother said Hubert was estranged from his parents, so it's nice to put it all together. I can't find a birth for Joseph (Thomas's father) but I suspect it's on or about 1786. So my journey ends here. I do know Pamela dies in 1860 and Thomas re-marries to an Anne. Thank you so much for all the effort put into solving this mystery for me.

My Smedley family stopped briefly in the Forest of Dean for half a generation or so, en route from Derbyshire to South Wales. Is anyone else interested in them?

Hi Slowhands,
I would be very interested in your Smedley line. Thanks for tracking down my Joseph Smedley and his father, Anthony. Are you and I loosely related?

Hello Sarah; I'm not sure if you are still active on this site but I reply in case. I have an interest in Daniel Smedley and wife Mary Anne who came to South Wales around 1850s.

1851@ Aberdare, Glamorgan
Daniel Smedley Head 39 Coal pit sinker Ashover, Derbyshire
Mary Anne Wife 39 Swan Green, Glam
Mary Anne Daug 18 Coleford, Gloucestershire
Daniel Son 16 Engine worker Coleford, Gloucestershire
Louisa Daug 13 scholar at home Coleford, Gloucestershire
Thomas Son 10 scholar at home Coleford, Gloucestershire

by 1856 he had relocated family to a small hamlet named Sebastopol in the Rhymney Valley and was landlord at the Sebastopol Arms (PH). He died 1861 with the license passing on to wife Mary Anne who was Innkeeper for the next decade. More information but will keep it short this time round.

Regards, Roy

Hubert GRIFFITHS / SMEDLEY 1860 - 1922

This family ended up a stone's throw from my Forest of Dean "immigrants to Yorkshire"(!), some of mine were in Sheffield and some in Barnsley. I wonder how many more people in Yorkshire also originate from the Forest of Dean?!

Looking for my great grandfather - Any Ideas?

by rookancestrybest @, United Kingdom, Saturday, May 01, 2010, 22:12 (5080 days ago) @ saralarasdog

My ancestors were also RC and from the Forest of Dean and my branch too moved to Yorkshire (South Yorkshire in our case though there is a mystery photograph of someone very much like my great, great grandfather taken in West Yorkshire and I do not know whether it is him or some other relative). There are good baptismal, confirmation and wedding records of RCs in the Forest of Dean. You might find two wedding days (usually consecutive) for your ancestors, this will be because they married in the RC church but to make it legal would marry in the C of E as well, the two ceremonies tended to be on two consecutive days. e.g. 1st and 2nd May! The RC population in the Forest of Dean and Monmouth was one of the highest in the country (Lancashire having the highest number). My family appears to have lived in the Forest of Dean for several generations and before they were permitted to have a church of their own RCs in the Forest of Dean used to go to each other's house, sometimes at great peril. My family used to have to make a journey through the Forest of Dean on a Sunday and used to mark the earth with a cross so that others going to the same place knew it was safe to proceed. If you are interested in more of these tales I would be pleased to post some more.
