50 years on - Severn Bridge Disaster - five men lost (General)

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Monday, October 25, 2010, 07:01 (4951 days ago)

Tuesday 25th October 1960

This was an incident which would be always be remembered as The Severn Bridge Disaster in which two tanker barges and five men were lost.

The tankers concerned were the ARKENDALE H, loaded with 300 tons of black oil, bound from Swansea to Worcester and the WASTDALE H, loaded with 350 tons of petroleum spirit, bound from Avonmouth to Worcester, both operated by John Harker Limited. Several craft had left Avonmouth that evening including the WYESDALE H, tug ADDIE and tug ROBERT A bound for Lydney with three lighters loaded with logs. There was no sign of fog on leaving Avonmouth and the craft proceeded steadily upstream towards Sharpness accompanied by vessels from Swansea.

But despite the dangers, on each bank there were brave men who launched small rowing boats in search of survivors.

On the Forest side, father and son Walter and Mike Cadogan from Awre, and Brian Price and Lemuel Gardiner, from Lydney, searched in vain. But Tommy Carter and Charles Henderson, setting off from the eastern bank, rowed right across the river to a point below the bridge where they heard the cries of Jack Cooper, the engineer on the Arkendale, whom they rescued and carried safely to Lydney harbour.

50 years on - Severn Bridge Disaster

by wyerunner @, Monday, October 25, 2010, 21:45 (4950 days ago) @ slowhands

I remember it well Slowhands as in 1958-9 I used that bridge to travel to and from Sharpness (my first job) to Lydney/Chepstow and used to lodge with a family of which the husband worked the Regent boats from Avonmouth to Stourport. Fortunately, he was not involved. A terrible tragedy it was. I used to be kept awake by the foghorn on many occasions as I was not used to it. Would be lovely to have the bridge restored. Is there, or is there to be a memorial plaque anywhere do you know?

To mark the 50th anniversary of the disaster two memorial stones have been unveiled on the banks of the Severn.

One is situated at Lydney Docks and a second is located at Purton.

Relatives and friends of the crew who lost their lives were there at the unveiling.

The plaques and their dedication ceremonies were organised by Paul Barnett, chairman of Friends of Purton.

There is also a special exhibition about the disaster currently showing at the Dean Heritage Museum until 16 January 2011.

I didn't know about this particular accident although my 2x great grandfather, Samuel Bush, was also a victim of the bridge when his barge, Industry, hit it in 1898 and he was drowned.

I was at Lydney Grammar school when the disaster occurred and many children used to travel from Sharpness and Dursley on the train over this bridge so they could not get to school and we never saw them ever again.

The smoke could be seen for many miles throughout the forest, the whole sky was alit and it was said (I dont know how true this was!) that the poor victims could be heard screaming in Lydney.

I am glad these lost lives are being remembered.

I lived in Sharpness at this time and was five years old when the bridge blew up. It changed our lives considerably. We used the train to Lydney for all needs(School, shopping, Dentist, etc)My mum used to take us over the bridge to have picnics on the riverbank and we all expected to go to school in Lydney. I used to hide under the seat as we crossed the bridge because I didn`t like to look down on the river! My sister lost her place at Lydney Grammar School that year because of the accident and had to go to Berkeley Secondary instead;a big disappointment for my parents. I was also told that some of the foundation stone used to build the bridge came from my Grandfather`s Quarry. How true that is, I don`t know.
