Hello David,
I came across your site when researching a branch of my wife's family - Rodway of Gloucester.
On 4 October, 1857 Frederick Rodway married Elizabeth Watkins, 26 yrs, at St Johns Church Dean Forest. Her father is shown on the certificate which I have as John Watkins, collier and she was a resident of East Dean.
Frederick was 22yrs, father John Rodway a labourer. In census records, however, his father is shown as Thomas Rodway!
Does seem to be the correct Frederick and Elizabeth who made their home in Gloucester from where the groom hailed. She is shown on census records as being born in Ruardean and theirs is the only marriage I can find registered on the B M D index for people with those names!

For some time I'd been trying to get Frederick's entry in the 1851 census, you found yet another variation on the name.
Does seem as his wife was John and Comfort Watkins's daughter, Elizabeth.

It all seems to indicate that Elizabeth Watkins who married Frederick Rodway is the same Elizabeth I have in my family tree. Elizabeth would be an elder sister to my 2nd great-grandmother Esther Watkins.
John and Comfort Watkins had 8 children and Elizabeth was the only one I had lost track of. Now I know what happened to her.
On the marriage certificate of Frederick and Elizabeth you mentiond St Johns Church Dean Forest is where they were married. There are a few St Johns churches in the Forest. Could you supply me with the details of the village or town where the church was located?
Would you be kind enough also to give me the names of the witnesses at the marriage as it is always interesting to know and often confirms we have the right people.

Good to hear from you.
Frederick Rodway and Elizabeth Watkins were married in St Johns Church, parish of St John, Dean Forest on 4 October, 1857.
Witnesses were Robert James ( x his mark ) and Sarah Yemin.
Since becoming of marriagable age right through to after the birth of their children, as shown on census returns, when they were returned as married, they are the only folk with those names who appear in the B M D.

I'm unable to locate a entry of this marriage in the Ruardean parish records we have on the web site.
On another subject I wonder if Sarah YEMM who is a witness is in fact the Sarah who is a siter of Elizabeth Watkins.
Sarah Watkins had two children both baptised at Ruardean. Henry born 1852 and James born 1857. No fathers name was given for these children and they were both baptised with the surname of Watkins.
Sarah later married John WILLIAMS in 1860 and had 6 children from this union.

It does look that way. I have recorded that William and Martha COLE had a daughter named Martha (sister to Comfort) who married a Robert JAMES.
Another sister to Comfort and Martha was named Sarah. Could Sarah have been the future Mrs. YEMM?
