George Henry VASEY born about 1857 (General)

by graham vasey @, Monday, July 25, 2011, 16:08 (4658 days ago)

Dear Sir,
My great grandfather was born in the Forrest of Dean, about 1857. He worked as a coalminer and moved to the mines in Pemberton, Wigan about 1875. In Pemberton he met and married my great grandmother Lona Whitton in 1879 and about 1882 they moved to Hemsworth in Yorkshire, where in 1938 he died and is buried (with great grandmother) in Pontefract, West Yorkshire. I found that my surname, Vasey, is spelt differently, example; Vassey, Vaser, Vaisey, Voisey to name a few! Also, I found that on some census he only uses his first name and not his middle one (Henry)?
I have a copy of his marriage certificate on which he states that his father's name was Frederick and occupation butcher.
I haven't been able to confirm exactly where in the Forrest of Dean he lived and who his parents were. Would be very appreciative of any help that you can offer.

Regards,
Graham Vasey.

As yet can't see a Frederick VAISEY, butcher, but an Edwin VAISEY, who has a son of the correct age - this Edwin VAISEY married Ann HOWELL in Dursley - 1855 - and Butchers were a family occupation.

Many thanks to m.p.griffiths, paul andrews and slowhands for their help. From my own research, george (and lona) were illiterate, their marriage certificate signatures were marked with their "X", which, indicates that they had not attended school as children. In each of the replies received from the forum, alfred vaisey stands out as the father of george, he died when george was an infant, which meant that as soon as george was old enough, he became the "bread winner" and worked as a collier (1871 census aged twelve). With regards to his father's name frederick (as stated on his marriage cert.), could it be alFRED but known in the family as fredrick?
My wife and I are planning to visit the forest of dean in september during which I would like to see as much of the area as possible, especially the coal mine tour, having served my mechanical apprenticeship at the coalmine here in yorkshire (must be in my family DNA).

regards,
graham.
