Samuel Preest, Gentleman about 1841 (General)

by normanelkins @, Thursday, August 04, 2011, 19:15 (4643 days ago)

I have an 1841 document which describes Samuel Preest as a "Gentleman".

Please could I ask if anyone knows of him, his background and standing in the Forest of Dean at that time?

Hi Norman,
a quick Google thro this up, it appears he was a mine owner ?.

"Skinners Garden
30 August 1842 to Samuel Preest, William Preest and Isaac Preest, all of Bream Woodside, for a pit in equal undivided parts situate at Skinners Garden, near Brookall Ditch, about 100 yards from Russell's Inclosure fence and near the ditch which runs to Park End Furnaces to get the coal from the Coleford High Delf and all unalloted veins above it.

F3 536
2 September 1887 Grantley Preest, Louise Preest, both of Bream, and James James, solicitor of Lydney representatives of Samuel Preest. Time for opening gale, granted July 1882, had expired.

8 July 1891 deakin applying for grant of land near Castlemain Pits for use in connection with Skinners Garden 'Will be required for sidings when our arrangements are complete for developing the deep-gales'. Land behind Parkend House. To be used as grazing land for ponies meanwhile.

13 December 1897 Not commenced working.
Gale was bought in an attempt to gain large area of deep gales 'some thousands of pounds' spent. Effort not successful and we relinquish other gales.

To be surrendered 30 August 1898, postponed until 25 November."

As you may know this doc is from the Lightmoor Press website who speciallise in FoD local History books.

Sorry no more time now myself but I suspect others here will help further.
ATB Jeff.

ps thought he might be mentioned in the great Sungreen Old Photos site. Sadly no photos but it does have copies of Bream Parish Magazines from the period which have Baptism "notices" for children of a Samuel Preest which all makes interesting reading.

Jefff
Thanks for information.
I know that Samuel Preest fathered a child in 1841, so this "Gentleman" is likely to be at least 20 at that time

From your post Slowhands:

1851 Bream
Sannie Friest [Samuel Priest] abt 1807 Newland, Gloucestershire, England Head Newland, Gloucestershire Proprietor of Houses

On the assumption this isn't a subject of "disrepute" as we aren't discussing 1920s Chicago etc, do I assume this means he's a landlord of rental housing ?

Samuel PREEST, Gentleman about 1843 Bream - Prior thread ?

Yes Slowhands and thanks, I saw that too but unless I'm mistaken (probably !), I didnt read anything specific re Samuel or his "gent" status.

UPDATE: Beg pardon Slowhands, didnt see this part of the prior thread, sorry.
1881 New Inn Bream
Samuel Preest abt 1845 Bream, Gloucestershire, England Head Newland, Gloucestershire Inn Keeper

Sounds like a good job for a retired miner ?, or maybe not ?

My grandfather died when I was very young after a lifetime down the pits in Lydbrook area, he was very ill with the usual dust-related illness I think yet still reached 68.
Apparently he'd previously wanted to become landlord of the Malt Shovel in Ruardean, but my grandmother stopped that idea pdq !
This was because his father before him had also been landlord there but he died young aged just 46, don't know why (yet).... but...?

Samuel Preest, Gentleman about 1841 previous thread 2011

by Gillymott @, St Briavels, GL15, Sunday, January 27, 2019, 18:05 (1910 days ago) @ m p griffiths

I've only just noticed this thread and that it goes back to 2011.
I believe the Preest family members mentioned in this thread, Samuel Preest,Isaac Preest, William Preest, are members of the Preest family related to my mother Lilian Ellen Preest,
1909-1975.

Ancestors: Thomas Preest (Bream) freeminer reg.22/9/1838 & wife Sarah Freeman (from Lydney).
Son William Preest 1796-1864 (Bream) freeminer, Thomas also had a son Isaac Preest, a cattle dealer and a son called Samuel James Preest. The Isaac Preest & Samuel Preest above I believe are the children of John Preest and Sarah James (sister of Warren James, of F of Dean riots).

Isaac & Samuel were freeminers and the dates fit. There are a few Preests with the same forenames.
Grantley Preest is I believe Thomas Grantley Preest who married Charlotte Robins. He is the son I think of Isaac Preest, the cattle dealer, as above.

A first cousin who still lives in the Forest of Dean mentioned this document and his family all know about it. His father, one of my mother's brothers was a former miner at Princess Victoria but left before it closed down. I am quite happy to communicate with others about this doc. or other freemining activities if they would like. Our Preest family was a large family mid 19th century, the first documented evidence of their surname comes from the National Archives and is related to taxation in the thirteenth century, possibly the then poll tax and/or land tax early 13th century, the name - John Preest in Gloucestershire. Whether he is a more distant family ancestor or not we cannot prove.
