Richard JAMES c1838 at Coleford or Gloucester (General)
Richard JAMES born c1838 at Coleford parents unknown. He had moved to Lancashire by 1861 census. He married in 1863 at Pemberton Lancashire and stated his father was William WILLAMS on the certificate. On another census he says born Gloucester. He died in 1900. How can I find any more information on my 2nd great grandfather?

Thank you all for so much information. I now need to elimate the other Richard James's that I found in the 1841 census and check to see if they are still in the Coleford area at 1861 census. My Richard James was then in Shevington Lancashire. If I find one missing in 1861 then I may have discovered my fellow. He first married Jane Downham in 1863, she died in 1868. Have both certificates as she is my ancester.

Hi,
NORMALLY the best website to use for FH purposes when trying to identify a town or place is the excellent Genuki, although any search engine will do.
Apparently Lingwood Parish is near Norwich, does this make sense for you ?.

However clearly the Census refers to a Glostershire place, but..?.
Assuming the transcription & spelling is correct, the only Lingwood reference I can find is this, in other words a Grade 2 Listed House in the Cheltenham area ?

Lingwood - its a hard one ! my suspicion is that he said Lane End to the enumerator
and what was written down looks like Lanend, but there is an extra down stroke or mark near the "e" so the transcription of Ling starts ! the end could be "ood" so Lingood or Lingwood gets transcribed :-)
