John TRIGG = Ann MATTHEWS 1st September 1838 (General)

by unknown, Thursday, February 09, 2012, 12:06 (4460 days ago)

I realise from previous posts that I am a bit late in the day with this one.

However this couple were my 2g-grandparents via Mary Ann TRIGG (b 24th November 1849, m John HARRINGTON 29th August 1880 in Oldham). Their first child, Harriet Lucy HARRINGTON (b 20th June 1881 in Oldham) was my paternal grandmother. I have full details of this line plus details of Mary Ann TRIGG's elder sister Lucy TRIGG who married John CLALFORD or CLELFORD in 1870. Both Mary Ann and Lucy left the Forest and moved to the industrial north and have connections in Halifax and Oldham. I have also researched the descendants of John and Ann's other children and would welcome contact from anyone else who has researched in this area.

I don't know why you say you are late in the day. I have Mary Ann Trigg 1849's father John Trigg 1817 in my Family Tree 1st cousin 4 times removed, so we will be related. He was the son of George Trigg 1796 & Lucy Marfell. I have the marriage certificate for John Trigg 1817 & Ann Matthews 1817, daughter of William Matthews 1792 & Esther Dubberley 1789, also the birth certificate for Mary Ann & Lucy Trigg, which I would be happy to email you if you wish, just click on the envelope icon next to my name and this will enable you to email me. I imagine that as you have the exact date of birth for Mary Ann Trigg that you already have hers.

I have Mary Ann Trigg as married to James Reynolds in 1868, with 5 children between 1871 & 1880. This could be wrong, or it could be that her marriage to John Harrington was a second marriage. Details of the 1868 marriage and the 1881 Census are shown below. You will notice that the witnesses are Thomas & Elizabeth Meredith. There are a number of associations between this Trigg family and the Marfell's and Meredith's - indeed Mary Ann Trigg's grandmother Lucy Marfell had a sister Mary Marfell who married Benjamin Trigg and their daughter Elizabeth Trigg married a Thomas Meredith.

The fact that I have little information regarding John Trigg & Ann's family could be explained by their moving to the industrial north.

The only other of John Trigg & Ann's children I have further details of is for Timothy Trigg 1842 who married my 5th cousin twice removed Mary Meek 1854.

Timothy applied for Gale - Prosper Colliery on Harrow Hill, which was granted 9.6.1890. I have some detailed information of the Gale in his hands, until

I see that Timothy and Lucy Trigg were both baptised 28 Aug 1842. Is there any other evidence to suggest that they were twins?
As Mary Ann, Elizabeth and John (Marfell Trigg) were subsequently baptised on 8 Jul 1855 then I suspect that they are not twins. John Marfell's birth seems to have been registered in Q3 1855 which fits the baptism date.
I am related via the same roots as Jim and as usual he has extended my knowledge of another branch of the extended family!

Colin

I have the birth certificate for Lucy, she was born on 24 Feb 1840. She is not a twin of Timothy.

John Trigg & Ann were quite fond of multiple baptisms, perhaps they had a deal on price :

Lucy & Timothy 28 Aug 1842
Sylvia 1 Dec 1844
George 31 Dec 1848
Mary Ann (born 24 Nov 1849), Elizabeth, John Marfell & Emily Jane 8 Jul 1855

Following the original posting I have found the marriage between Lucy Trigg and John Clalford in 1870, Lucy death in 1902 Gloucester & John in 1912 Oldham.

I can only find the 1881 Census, and that reveals that John Clalford may have been married before, a daughter Ada predates his marriage to Lucy, I thought the age might be wrong, but she is employed :

Hi there, bit of a newbie and very confused.
I have traced a Mary Marfell Meredith 1842-1901 married Thomas Stephens. They had daughter Rhesa, who married Oliver Albert Watkins.
Mary Marfell Meredith parents were Thomas Meredith 1821-1959 & Elizabeth Trigg 1819-1903. Their children were Lucy 1849, Samuel 1845-1914, Martha 1844, Thomas 1861 and Mary.
Elizabeth Trigg parents were Benjamin Trigg 1789-1865 & Mary Marfell 1795-1840. Elizabeth siblings were Sarah Ann 1831, John 1830 abd Absolam 1827.

Already been very kindly directed to various links but its just confusing me more. Does anybody have any info regarding Benjamin and Mary's parents? Also the Absolam connection is puzzling.
Thanks very much

There are a couple of candidates for Benjamin's parents as the Parish Records have two births around the approximate date.
1) Benjamin Trigg b 1787 Mitcheldean to Richard Trigg and Elizabeth Jenkins (married 1778 Weston-under-Penyard)

2) Benjamin Trigg b 1791 Mitcheldean to Benjamin Trigg and Priscilla Welsh (married 1779 Newland)

For what it's worth I have the line you are investigating under 1) above, but you may see from my previous post in this thread - I was looking at this branch a long time ago and cannot at the moment see any other relevant indicators.

Dave

Further to my earlier posting, also email freom yourself advising that Ada Trigg was an illegitimate daughter of Lucy Trigg, before her marriage to John Clalford. For continuity of the thread, I need to update my earlier posting.

I have been re-checking the marriage between "a" Mary Ann Trigg and James Reynolds in 1868, which I previously had attributed to Mary Ann Trigg daughter of John Trigg & Ann Matthews. I had been fooled by the Meredith Witnesses who had associations with this family. I have noted that the marriage certificate you sent me of the marriage between Mary Ann Trigg & John Harrington that Mary Ann is shown as spinster, also the witnesses include Emily Trigg, which is probably her sister.

The final piece of evidence that I show below is the 1871 Census entry for John Trigg, which shows he is clearly not deceased as is the John Trigg father at the 1868 wedding between Mary Ann Trigg & James Reynolds. Also on the 1871 Census is Ada Trigg, illegitimate daughter of Lucy :

John TRIGG = Phoebe SIER 1848

by unknown, Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 22:02 (4455 days ago) @ unknown

I have found the other John TRIGG who had a daughter Mary Ann who married James REYNOLDS. The trail is:

John TRIGG (1828) = Phoebe SCIER (or SIER) (1821) Westbury on Severn 1848 Dec 11 713. They are in the 1851 Census (HO107-1959-254-27) with daughter May (sic) A TRIGG (1849) living at Green Bottom, East Dean, with John shown as Iron Miner. They are next door (same page) to Phoebe's parents John (1777) and Margaret (1781) SIER (SEN in the index but clearly SIER on the original).

They are at the same address in 1861 (RG09-1756-33-7) and 1871 (RG10-2601-24-7). In 1861 John SIER had died and they are all in the same household with Margaret SIER as Head and John TRIGG (Iron Miner) as Son-in-law, with Phoebe and children Mary (1849), George (1852), Hester (1855) and Margaret (1860). By 1871 John TRIGG had died (probably Westbury on Severn 1862 Dec 6A 154) because Phoebe is now shown as Widow and only Esther and Margaret are at home. The next entry on the next page in the 1871 Census (RG10-2601-24-8) shows James REYNOLDS (1843), Mary Ann REYNOLDS (1849) and George Edwin REYNOLDS (1871). Their marriage was in 1868 (Westbury on Severn 1868 Dec 6A 420) where for some reason Mary Ann is indexed as TREGG.

Hi there Dave, I am descended from John Trigg and Phoebe Sier.
Their daughter Esther Eliza Trigg married George Reed
and their daughter Phoebe Ann married a Francis John Vowles (my Maiden name)
their eldest son George was my grandfather and we all carry the middle name Reid (misspelt) to commemorate Phoebe Ann who died weeks after giving birth to their daughter Winifred Vowles.
So I guess John and Phoebe are my great-great-great-grandparents...
For some unknown reason , the Reed side of the family had nothing to do with the children of that marriage even after Francis John was killed in Flanders in 1917, leaving tham orphaned.
The children including my grandfather George were raised by his Vowles aunts in and around Backwell, Somerset.
Phoebe Ann and Francis John's marriage took place in Cardiff where all the children were born. I have only just discovered this side of the family , (yesterday!)due to a miss transciption of Vowles into Powles on the 1911 Cardiff census. I found them by tracing the address that my grandad was born at.
I know its a long shot, but if anyone on this site has any clue as to the reason of the families falling out I would be very grateful to be let in on the secret !
All the best, Kate Sheppard (nee Reid-Vowles)

Your VOWLES were Inn Keeper/ farmers and the REEDS were iron miners - perhaps Phoebe was "not good enough" for Francis (?)

Hi there Kate,

Your John TRIGG (b ca 1828 Iron Miner Green Bottom in 1851) who married Phoebe SIER (Dec 1848) is not the same person as my John TRIGG (b ca 1819 Collier Harry Hill in 1851) who married Ann MATTHEWS (Sep 1838). Just to confuse things further both couples had a daughter called Mary Ann born around 1849 one of whom was my g-grandmother.

If we have a connection it must be earlier in the TRIGG family tree. Note I have found the John TRIGG = Phoebe SIER family in the Census on several occasions whilst looking for the John TRIGG = Ann MATTHEWS family and can let you have the PRO References if you have not already found them.

Hi Dave, Sorry to hear we arent cousins! slowhands has suggested that the families Reed and Vowles fell out due to Phoebe's low ancestry, but as he was just a railway labourer its unlikely. hope we can find a connection, I know very little about this side of my family- strange as four generations, including my own daughter, carry the family name.

Hi Kate. It's always disappointing when a link does not turn up but I have some more information on your John TRIGG because I have his DC which I asked for by mistake when looking for mine. It shows that he died on 10 October 1862 at East Dean, aged 35, Miner, Accidentally Killed in a Mine Pit, Information received from James TEAGUE Coroner for Gloucestershire. Inquest held 13 October 1862. Registered by Edward TEAGUE Registrar. 25 November 1862. I have also looked on Ancestry and there are 11 trees that include your John TRIGG. Most show his father to be James TRIGG 1791-1856 and some show his mother as Nancy/ Ann(e) DAVIES. A few show his grandmother as Elizabeth TRIGG but none go further back than that so there isn't a link to my TRIGG tree. Perhaps we will find one someday. Dave
