I have just seen your message and I am amazed that there is a Morgan Society! I am a Morgan and proud too!

My father was from the Forest Of Dean. I know nothing about my family roots and would dearly love to know more about my family name! If I was in England I would love to be at your meeting!

My father was from Lydbrook and came to N.Z in the 1960 but he died when I was a teenager and I was told very little about his family etc although I do know his parents names. My dad did tell me that Morgan means " by the sea " Is that true?

"Welsh Surnames", T. J. Morgan and Prys Morgan, University of Wales Press, 1985.

Dr. Prys Morgan warns of the dangers inherent in explaining the meaning of a name which was probably in use for many centuries before the time of the first surviving Welsh manuscripts but it is safe to say that his opinion must hold great weight.

The elements of Morgan can be seen in the earliest spelling of Morcant ( Old Welsh). 'Mor' is probably from the Welsh word Mawr 'great' and 'cant' is 'hundred' with a secondary meaning of 'herd' or 'throng'. Hyddgant became Hyddgan, which means a herd of deer. The same elements differently mixed up can be seen in the names Morien, Morfudd and Gwygant or Gwrgan (this gives rise to Worgan and Wargent and other names). 'Great throng' with the suggestion of battle throng, seems to be a typical wishful name to give to a boy.

Hello - I'm wondering if I would qualify for membership in your society. My great grandmother was Carmalla Morgan of Bream's. She was born in Bream's in 1844, sailed for the United States in August 1871. By that time she had married my great-grandfather, John Fletcher of Woolaston, and was the mother of 3 sons, one of which was my grand father, Ernest Fletcher. I would be very interested in information on your society and would also be interested in hearing from someone from your area who would be interested in correspondence. Good luck with your annual meeting, wish I could be there.

Would be very interested in hearing from anyone still living in the area. Have been attempting to find anyone who may be related to any of John Fletcher's siblings. Brother Alfred never married, Joseph never married from anything I can find. Have no other knowledge of Sarah, Emily or Armaday. Do know that at time of WWII, U.S. family in touch with cousins in England by the surname of Schillibear. Have no knowledge of where they were located or how they were related. Joseph Fletcher (1853) lodged with a family headed by Mary Schillibear in Woolaston in 1881 and 1891 (residence-Commons). In any case thank you for your help in the past, and any future help that may come my way.

One of his servants is young John Shillibear from Bristol

He marries a Mary and lives on the Common....

(I think the Shillibear/Shillabeer/Shillabear etc surname is from Devon )

I've only just joined this excellent site, as I am researching my 'grandmother's' family the Morgans and have discovered they originated from the Forest of Dean.

I got back to her g.grandparents and from their marriage certificate her g.g.grandfather William Morgan. Her g.grandfather was William Morgan circa 1825/7, on census' from Newland, Glos/ Forest of Dean, Glos/ Bream, Glos.

Thanks to some very kind people on this site, it would seem that William may have been illegitimate and his father may or may not have been the said William Morgan as his probable mother was Diana Morgan, unmarried, but with a number of children, including Mary and William in 1841 census. In 1851 William was a visitor in Mynyddislwyn, Monmouthshire and married and settled there temporarily in 1852, moved to Somerset by next census 1861 but had then moved back to Monmouthshire by 1871 and permanently settled there. In 1851 Bream, Diana and her daughter Mary were still together with another child Carmalla also down as a daughter, although the baptism records show her to be the daughter of Mary.

You will know Carmalla married John Fletcher as they are your relatives. My William named one of his daughters Carmela, he also had two sons whom he named Ernest and Alfred, which were the names of your Carmalla's sons also.

I am convinced that William is part of that family now as there are too many name coincidences occurring. If I am right, William would have been your Carmalla's uncle.

Have you any evidence in your findings of any William Morgan in your family. I would love to hear from you to share our findings.

Will not be able to attend your next meeting at Hay, as I am here in Australia.
My Grandmother was Linda Gertrude Morgan & spent her life in Ruardean.
Her Father Alexander Thomas Morgan married Emily Jane Shaw from Sellack. They also lived in the Forest
His father was Francis Morgan originally from Monmouth - a Shoemaker.

Hi.... Though I am not to my knowledge a descendant of the Morgans, I am interested in finding out as much as possible about Thomas Henry MORGAN of Tidenham House.

I am also advised that there was some sort of business arrangements with Izett STEWART and Mr Francis Vernon LOCKEY of 'Ivy Rock' Tidenham in which my Grt Grandfather William EDWARDS was also involved.

Another hello from New Zealand
My Morgan roots are a bit further removed. However, my great-great-grandmother was Roseanna (with various spellings) Morgan and she was married to Thomas Blake in 1835 in Bridstow, Herefordshire. I have her in two census reports as having been born in Walford (which was my mother's family name)
My great-grandfather, Albert Walford was born in Lydbrook.
Roseanna Morgan was the daughter of Thomas Morgan and Jane Preece.
Any more information would be gladly welcomed.

My great grandmother's name was Lucy Watts (born about 1855) her father John Watts operated a Pottery in Whitecliff, Gloucester, around 1840 onwards. His father, also John, operated the pottery before that date. The pottery continued in operation until about 1880 or thereabouts. Lucy's parents were John Watts and Eliza Morgan. Eliza was born about 1819 and her parents were Richard and Sarah Morgan (I think). They had several other children. I live in Australia so cannot join your Society but would be interested to hear from anyone who thinks they might be related to me. I have found it very difficult to access birth records from Newland and therefore cannot be absolutely sure of dates, I only have Census records to go by. My father's and my grandfather's second christian name was Morgan.
