LEDBURY MORGAN LINKS (General)

by patchpear, Thursday, August 11, 2016, 14:13 (2787 days ago)

I have traced a George Morgan, born Ledbury 1821 to David and Sarah Morgan.
However I have no record of where David was born and Sarah's Maiden name etc. Any chance of a lookup please? Or some knowledge of Morgans in Ledbury? Im presuming as they arent far from the Welsh border that they may have originated from over there with a name like Morgan.
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum. Have you searched this site's PRs ?.

Here's George's baptism PR in full;

Record_ID: 293616
Entry_Number: 943

Using Advanced Search can find all Baptisms to "David" and "Sarah Morgan", these all look to be good fits for one (our) family;

Year Surname Child Forenames Parents Forenames Mothers Surname Residence Occupation Parish Chapel
1811 MORGAN James, David Sarah Dymock
1812 MORGAN Rosanna, David Sarah Dymock
1816 MORGAN David, David Sarah Dymock Labourer Dymock
1817 MORGAN David, David Sarah Dymock Labourer Dymock
1819 MORGAN Thomas, David Sarah Dymock Labourer Dymock
1820 MORGAN Matthew, David Sarah Dymock Labourer Dymock
1822 MORGAN George, David Sarah Wellington Division Labourer Ledbury
1823 MORGAN Harriet, David Sarah Homend Labourer Ledbury
1825 MORGAN Sarah, David Sarah Homend Labourer Ledbury

I've also used the Advanced search looking for any marriages of a Morgan with father David, there are only five in the whole PR database, none in the Ledbury/Dymock area and none are our family. Seems odd !...
Similarly I don't think there are any Morgan marriages with mother Sarah as a witness, but needs rechecking to be sure.

This may be George's brother's burial, right age and address. I found this PR by accident while searching his father, I recommend you search the PRs for the other siblings, burials and marriages, may find clues as to parents David & Sarah's background eg their own siblings may have been witnesses, etc.

Looks like George's father died young, perhaps explaining my inability to find him on the 1841 Census;

Record_ID: 195888

In fact I've struggling to find any of the family in the 1841 Census !...

Cannot be certain as we're dealing with common names, but I think this may well be mother Sarah's Burial, or possibly her mother ?, still in Homend Ledbury.

Record_ID: 184232

CONCLUSION:
Not sure where to go from here, given my sadly limited available time. I've tried searching the Census's for parent's David and Sarah without any real luck at all, except to prove that there are an awful lot of Morgans of this name and approx age in the Glos/Herefordshire area, but which are ours ?. If indeed they lived until 1841 ?. Similarly no definite luck searching for daughter Harriet (I thought this might be a rarer name, wrong !).

You're very welcome, we are all always pleased to help-out on this friendly forum.

Re the Advanced search feature, this is a really helpful feature and very flexible, I do recommend any newer users "play around" with it and find just how useful it can be, especially when researching commonly-occurring names.
For example, as your family appear to be local to the Homend part of Ledbury, I've re-searched the Burial PRs using Advanced search, and only inputting the words "Morgan" and "Homend" into the Surname and Residence search boxes. This gave a table of just 12 Burial records. The headings of each column in the table are Blue hyperlinks, so clicking any heading will change the way the table is displayed/ordered. Clicking "Year" will make it display in chronological order, thus making it easier to interprete, as below.

The following are the Burial PRs which I suggest are PROBABLY related to your family, so need further research (marriages?, Census' etc); I'm sure some of them will relate to the earlier Baptisms I listed, or give clues as to earlier generations of the family.

Record ID Year Month Day Surname Forenames Residence Age at death Parish Chapel
195835 1826 Mar 27 MORGAN illegible David Homend 12 Ledbury
195888 1826 Sep 5 MORGAN David Homend 34 Ledbury
195931 1827 Apr 13 MORGAN Thomas Homend 48 Ledbury
196433 1834 Jan 19 MORGAN Edward Homend 41 Ledbury
196495 1834 Sep 8 MORGAN Esther Homend 66 Ledbury
207301 1837 Apr 2 MORGAN Phebe Homend 34 Ledbury
207748 1841 Nov 21 MORGAN James Homend 9 Ledbury
208642 1852 Sep 8 MORGAN John Sampson Homend 1 Ledbury
184232 1871 Jan 6 MORGAN Sarah Homend Ledbury 97 Ledbury
220389 1886 Jun 7 MORGAN Ernest Edward Homend infant Ledbury

The same approach can be sued to search this site's Marriage PRs, again using surname "Morgan" and residence "Homend" gives these PRs.

Year Grooms_Surname Grooms_Forenames Grooms_Residence Brides_Surname Brides_Forenames Brides_Residence Parish_Chapel
1842 MORGAN Thomas Homend TAYLOR Sarah Homend Ledbury

and,

1841 BROOKES George Fleetwood Homend MORGAN Ann Homend Ledbury

The full PRs gives far more detail, and suggests the two maybe father and daughter;

Luckily the two occurred just before the 1841 Census was taken, this may give other members of the family.

Eg, could this be our Thomas, and there's a Harriet too... ???

1841 Homend Street, Ledbury, Herefordshire.

Harriett Morgan 11 1830 Female Herefordshire England

Hoping this helps a little more, good luck !
