Alfred James Williams d1973 Ross-on-Wye (General)

by Squiddley1957 @, Thursday, December 14, 2017, 08:59 (2318 days ago)

I wish to contact any family of Mr Williams. He was formerly in the Welsh Guards and spent some time as a prisoner of war. His family might be interested to learn some details of his experiences. Please note that my previous request (Alfred James Williams d1990) was directed at the wrong person.

Do you please have any more information that may assist this enquiry ?.

Is this the gentleman you mean ?

from FreeBMD; presumably died in late December of 1973, and registered the following month ?

Williams Alfred James 25SE1919 Ross 9a 247

IF he was born locally (it's not a rare name!), this could be his birth record.

This Alfred James Williams was he born in Bream in 1919 and died on Christmas day 1973. Mr Williams took his own life and consequently was subject of an inquest - hence the JFM 1974 death registration. He might be on the 1939 register but I don't have access at present.

Further: he is NOT the Alfred James Williams mentioned in your final paragraph. I contacted his son - this Alfred was born in June 1919 and was in the Gloucesters. The Alfred I am after was in the Welsh Guards.

Hi,

sorry for posting records for the wrong Alfred, it's not a rare name.

Given the Ross death record, I wonder if this could be your Alfred's marriage record ?

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page

Marriages Jun 1944

TYLER Rita J Williams Hereford 6a 1405
WILLIAMS Alfred J Tyler Hereford 6a 1405

However I'm unable to find any records for offspring, or even a birth for Rita ?

Williams was a Prisoner of War in Poland until at least July 1942. I suppose it's possible that he got back home in 1944 but I think it unlikely. The only additional info I have is that he was a police sergeant, married, with at least one child, and living in Alton Road, Ross.

From Genes Reunited, is this a possibility for his marriage? It would only take a small error in the recording of his forename.

Probably not. It's likely that Williams was captured rather than escaping via Dunkirk. That means he was in captivity from at least 1940.

Hi again,
am I correct in thinking this information, esp regarding his family, came from the reports of his death, maybe the inquest ?

Like you I don't have full access to the 1939 Register, but I tried without any definite success to find Alfred using their free search facility. Hopefully one of our members can find him on the 1939 Register, altho' given his age I suspect his marriage was post 1939 if not post-war.

Yes the information about his death came from a report in the Ross Gazette. My interest stems from the item to which the following link refers. Please note that his name was inverted because the Gestapo did not have an English interpreter so they were forced to use a local Czech student.

Thanks, very interesting article.
Re the Gazette, I did try searching on the BNA site, but without any success - probably because the most recent articles it carries are from the 1950s or thereabouts.
Are more recent (eg 1970s) copies available to read anywhere, perhaps in Ross library or at the publishers ?

Hi,
sorry for slow reply, been busy getting our new house in some sort of order before Christmas !
Yes I'd like to read that article sometime, please, altho' please be assured there's no rush whatsoever. The main reason I mentioned the newspapers was because I was trying to understand whether you'd found this article after a general search of the local papers, and if so how and where (on line ?, Ross library ?, ??). Or to put it another way, could there be other helpful articles from the same source ?
Finally, I strongly recommend you remove your email address from your post, it can be seen & copied worldwide and may attract unwanted spam emails and even viruses etc. This is explained in the "Must Read Before Posting" section at head of the forum homepage. It also states how to send private emails - just click the blue envelope icon next to my username, and the resulting window allows you to send an email directly to my inbox both safely and privately.
Thanks, Jeff.
