I'm not sure if anyone can help me but I/m having great difficulty finding my great grandfather (John Charles WIntour) birth details and so his parents etc. My family history trail has come to a halt at the moment. Any one have any suggestions please? The details I have are 24th August 1872 in Whitecroft, Lydney but there don't seem to be any records that I can find. Ty

This should get you started:

Birth Registration from GRO Index:
Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
WHINTOUR, JOHN CHARLES LEWIS
GRO Reference: 1872 S Quarter in MONMOUTH Volume 11A Page 30

This tells us that mother's maiden name is LEWIS.

Possible marriage of parents:
Marriages Jun 1870
Lewis Caroline Monmouth 11a 36
WINTOUR Richard Monmouth 11a 36

A transcript of this marriage can be found in the Parish Registers on this site.

Thank you so much for all the information and advice...... I have managed to go further back in to my ancestry than I thought. I'm now around the 16th - 17th centuries. :-)
