Harry GRINDLE, father of Percy & Roy, Coach Operators C20th.

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Tuesday, July 19, 2011, 12:38 (4666 days ago) @ slowhands

Dear Slowhands, or anyone else that knows, please help.

I wasn't aware the Grindles were so prevalent in the FoD, yes I knew of one or two at school in the 70s, but the "main" ones I knew were the Cinderford Coach operators Roy and Percy. My father knew them thro the business, and their father Harry.
My eldest sister's wedding car in 1976 was a silver Austin Princess limo belonging to Percy I believe, I remember an elderly gent driving it, possibly Percy.

Anyhow to the point: I see on the other thread the address Hinders Lane crops up a lot, does anyone know whether this explains why Roy Grindle's yard was at the base of Dockham Road "off" Hinders Lane ?.
Secondly, from the following PR, does anyone know what an "oilman" is ?.
Sounds more like a railway term to me, but...?

Thanking you again, Jeff.

BUT what sort of oil, and to who ?. Surely oil wasn't used in quantity for heating houses etc in those days ?.
Thanks.

I think I'm beginning to see the Wood for the Trees ! (although I'm not sure whether there is actuall a light at the end of my personal tunnel, Beechings cuts perhaps).

BUT what about that "oil merchant" stuff ?.
Not "petrol" aka filling station presumably

Harry sold oil as in a lubricant and heating / lighting fuel rather than petrol.

For what it's worth a couple of my ancestors were in oil!! One an oil 'hawker' delivered oil, mainly paraffin, on his horse and cart to homes, places of work and several inns. Yes, the horse did find it's own way back home all by itself many times with it's owner slightly the worse for wear! The other ancestor an oil 'merchant' owned an oil and hardware shop in Ashley Down Rd for over 60 years, selling paraffin mainly for lighting and heating.

Thanks guys, I hadn't realised oil was used in such quantities in those days.
That said, I spose if you only sell a pint a time, but to every household, thats good steady business.

Bedford Coach Preserved

For those who remember the 1960's and 1970's
Keep your eyes open for this 1972 Bedford Coach

It is preserved as a "Roy Grindle" coach
This was a familiar sight in the Forest and beyond

The gentleman in the coach is believed to be Roy's son Harry
'I'm sure I met Harry's son Philip in Dockham Road a few years back'

That's right, we got Grindle's coaches as schoolbuses at my first year at RFDGS at Berry Hill so abt 73/4, then we moved to Ken Beard's. I suspect that was because Beards had a bigger fleet and Grindles were rather upmarket touring coaches for us rabble. Once or twice we did get this same bus when nothing else was available, I remember the metal pennant on the roof, very "flash" !. Had to behave VERY well when on her !.
