I actually live in Broadwell but grew up in Monmouth, and while searching for details of my grandfathers brother Ernie Beach and came across this address Tomblins Ditch and wonder where abouts it was. Any old Broadwellians know?

I now know Ernies wife Zillah had a twin sister Jessie, and I'm in touch with the grandchildren of Zillah.

Zillah Smith daughter of Milson and Ada nee White, previous generations all local to Broadwell apart from a Caroline Hale born not too far away on Penalt, should anyone see a link. cheers Fred

Thanks for that, I'll nip over to Christchurch and see some old friends they'll be able to pin point it, I'm sure the name survives somehow. In one census there's a Tomblin family living there, and they are still about, it must have been a row of houses. But if you look at the old photos of the area it looks like The Somme in the first World war so they might have been living in a trench

I found a family near Skenfrith living "The Gutter" I have no idea if it was literally the side of the road, or a house. My daughter actually lived down The Lonk some years ago

The TOMLINS that are turning up born around 1815 are involved in Lime burning . kilns.
English Bicknor has a lime hertitage. Joyford / Berry Hill are linked to this.
Perhaps Tomblins Ditch ( bank ?) is a reflection of historic Lime extraction and burning (?) by the Tomblins/Tumblins family.

According to the Census records held by Gloucestershire Archives, Tomblin's Ditch has this brief history. 1851 it is part of Christchurch, 1871 part of Five Acres and by 1891 had disappeared completely. I don't know this area but an OS map shows me the Five Acres crossroads and an abandonned quarry opposite Five Acre Farm.

My great, great grandfather Thomas Pullen is listed as living at Tomblin's Ditch in 1851, Berry Hill in 1861 but Berry Hill Road in 1881. This narrows down the area as I cannot imagine that the family moved around much.
