Hannah STENSON - niece of John Forester STENSON (General)

by merve, Monday, October 26, 2009, 15:49 (5597 days ago)

Hi Everyone,
I am trying to find out more info on the origins of my ancestor Hannah STENSON born around 1837 at Coleford Gloucestershire (no BMD record). I know from the census data she was living in the household of John Forester STENSON and Elizabeth STENSON (nee STEPHENSON) from 1841 (age 4) to the time of her first marriage in 1862 (age 25). Her relationship is described in the census return as "Niece". I am assuming that as John Forester STENSON's birthplace is given as "Forest of Dean Gloucestershire" she is more likely to be a blood relative of his than of Elizabeth, although I have not ruled out this possibility. I also know that Elizabeth STENSON was a daughter of James STEPHENSON (brother of George STEPHENSON the railway engineer).

I read on another forum that John Forester STENSON was a son of William STENSON - "the father of Coalville" who I understand was a prominent figure in this area (he has an entry in Wikipedia). I have as yet not ordered up any marriage certificates for Hannah as I am hoping that as this was a well-known family, some research will already have been carried out by someone.

I would like to know who Hannah's parents were and if possible discover what the circumstances were that caused her to be living with her Aunt and Uncle at such an early age. I do know that her Aunt and Uncle were themselves childless.

Regards,
Merve

Thomas Alexander STENSON 1806 1867 ( m HATTON)

Hi Slowhands,

Thanks for this info.

With respect to the link to the previous post for John Forester (Stinson)STENSON, this is the household that I am interested in. However, I have the transcripts for all the censuses that include Hannah STENSON from 1841 up to her death in 1891, so working forward from 1841 has not been a problem.

The direction I want to go in now is prior to 1841 and I assume the information you have given me in this post should help. I presume these are extracts from Parish Records ? Do you believe Thomas Alexander STENSON could be Hannah's father or is this for me to pursue and decide ? You mention "A hint of Non-comformist coming through" What implications does this have ? I sorry to be so obtuse but I am new to this type of data and I am struggling to understand it.

Regards,
Merve.

yes thats my "best guess" that needs testing further, based mainly on the lack of other STENSON/ STINSON members in the area !

You mention "A hint of Non-comformist coming through"

Only that it adds a degree of complication since the non-conformists seem to be lax in registering births from 1837.....it wasn't compulsory at that stage, and baptism's tended to be for old children / young adults.

Hi All

Would SKS who has the National Burial Index please look for Thomas Alexander
STENSON (STINSON) who died 19 May 1867 in London. While he died in London,
I have been told he was buried in Coleford, Gloucestershire. He may also
have been buried elsewhere.

Thanks

I am looking for the family of my great- great grandmother, HANNAH STENSON, who was brought up in Leicester at the beginning of the 1840's. Her uncle, JOHN FORESTER STENSON and his wife, ELIZABETH, were her guardians, John being a Coal Merchant and agent for the Coalville Coal Co. Hannah's father was THOMAS ALEXANDER STENSON, also a Coal Merchant but I am unable to find the name of her mother. I know that HANNAH was born in Coleford, Gloucs. around 1837/38 but am unable to find a record of her birth.
I would also be interested to know if there is a connection between John FORESTER and William STENSON of Coalville, Leics., William being the founder of the Coalville Mining Industry. This may appeal to Mining or Railway enthusiasts!!

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Yours,
Deborah J Herschman, London

Hi slowhands,

Wow, you seemed to have really nailed it with this post !
First part confirms your theory that Hannah STENSON was a daughter born to the marriage of Thomas Alexander STENSON and Jane HATTON (plus the outline family tree from "Vern in Ontario" also fills in other gaps for me as well).

Part 2 from Deborah J Hershman is of interest too because Hannah STENSON was also my great-great grandmother via the PADMORE -> NUNNELEY line.

Thanks for all your efforts,

Merve.
