Death record of William FLUCK died 1862 Whitchurch (General)

by dindylynn, Saturday, February 06, 2010, 18:12 (5484 days ago)

I am hoping that someone may be able to help me in finding a record of death for an ancestor William FLUCK. His burial is listed on this website in WHITCHURCH Herefordshire 1/8/1862 aged 80 BUT I can find no record of his death so that I can order a death certificate. Can anyone advise me if perhaps his death was not registered or if the burial records may be wrong? I have searched through the records for death in the quarter JAS 1862 under possible other spellings of his surname, FLUKE, FLOOK etc and also the quarter before.
Any ideas would be greatfully recieved, Denise

Hi Denise
Just found a William Fluck registered JAS quarter 1861 at GRO ref 6c/155, but seems a long time to wait to bury him in Whitchurch if it's the same one!! Unfortunately no ages on the index page.
Cheers, Celia

Thanks again Denise

Thank you for your message and for taking the time to look for me. I think it's probably the right persons burial so may just have to clock it up to an administative error and that the surname was perhaps mis-spelt somehow.
Thanks again Denise

I don't know, but Fluck is not a common name as far as I am aware. A Walter Henry Fluck was executor of the will of one of my grandfathers brothers. He may be one of yours. Places involved were Newnham and Soudley and the time frame was around 1926.

Best of Luck,

Roger

Not a "rare" surname in Gloucestershire - concentrations around Stroud and Tewkesbury

This interesting and unusual surname is derived from the Old Norse personal
name "Floki", which was originally a byname meaning outspoken or enterprising;
the name may have been given to a latter-day entrepreneur. This is one of the
many Scandinavian names to have survived into modern surnames; other such
names are Lawman, from the Old Danish "Lag(h)man", Coleman, from "Kalman",
Swain, from "Sueinn", and Drummond, from "Dromundr". The name development
since 1609 includes the following: Joseph Floox (1694, London); Joseph Flukes (1787, London);
John Flooks (1797, London); and Charles Fluck (1829, London).
The modern surname can be found as Flook, Fluck, Flooks, Flucks and Flux.

You may recognise this "local" FLUCK

Name: Diana M Fluck
Mother's Maiden Surname: Payne
Date of Registration: Oct Nov Dec 1931
Registration district: Swindon
Registration county: Wiltshire
Volume Number: 5a
Page Number: 30

She was born Diana Mary Fluck but dropped her rather awkward last name after being sent to
the London Academy of Music and Drama aged 14 (although in later auditions she
said she was 17) where she was spotted by a talent scout.
better known as Diana Dors (23 October 1931 – 4 May 1984)

Diana also honeymooned at Bradley Court , Mitcheldean when it was an Hotel.

Thank you very much for your reply and the Fluck website. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to contain my Fluck's.

Thanks anyway, Denise

FLUCK surname

Thank you for the interesting information. My ancestor was a woman so her name changed when she married but her brother seems to have changed his name to Fluke. It took me a while to trace him but I'm still not sure why if there is a record of burial for Thomas, their father, why can I not find his record of death in the death registers? Could it be that his surname was mis-spelt??
