BOWERY/BALLINGER 1871 (General)
by spindles , Gloucester, Sunday, March 21, 2010, 17:51 (5440 days ago)
A couple of years ago I asked for help about my GGGrandmother Isabelle Bowery who married Edwin Merrett and her connection with a Spanish woman who married Thomas Henry Bowery. I had some help off Slowhands and have managed to find out a bit more but I am stuck on a couple of things and am hoping someone will recognise some names.
My Isabelle Bowery names a William Bowery, thatcher, deceased on the marriage certificate but I believe this was a lie to cover up the fact that she was base born. I have found that a Julia Elizabeth Bowery was born in Newent in 1871 and hope this might be her but I could be totally wrong. A Rosa Bowry entered the Newent workhouse and came out, so I was told, as Rosa Ballinger with a baby named Julia Ballinger born 1st October 1871 (birth certificate info) but there is a Julia Elizabeth Bowry (mother Rose) baptised 19th November 1871 on this website.
I wondered if it was likely that a baby could be baptised with one name and registered with another?
Rose Bowry appears with several siblings and mother Elizabeth, living with a John Ballinger in the 1851 and 1861 census in Longhope but I can't find a marriage, only of Elizabeth Bowery Ballinger widow marrying Joseph Manns in February 1871. I wonder if this Elizabeth is the

Sorry, accidentally posted the message before I'd finished. As I was saying:-
Rose BOWERY appears with several siblings and mother Elizabeth, living with a John BALLINGER in the 1851 and 1861 census in Longhope but I can't find a marriage, only of Elizabeth BOWERY BALLINGER, widow, marrying Joseph MANNS in February 1871. I wonder if this Elizabeth is the mother of Rosa and the reason for the BOWERY/BALLINGER name change.
In 1873, just after Julia was born, Rosa married a John HUGHES and the 1881 census shows Rosa, a widow, living with her two children Eliza Hughes and John Hughes in Ledbury. I wondered if Rosa wanted to look "respectable" on the census form so gave her children her deceased husband's name. By the time of the 1891 census there is an Isabel BOWRY aged 19 living in Gloucester and with a place of birth of Ledbury. I would like to find out definitely if my Isabelle Bowery is Julia Elizabeth Bowry/Elizabeth Ballinger and that she perhaps dropped the Julia for Elizabeth and, because of the Spanish connection, thought that Isabelle was more exotic and changed it to Isabelle. It doesn't help that there are so many different spellings of Bowery as well as surname changes.
Please can anyone recognise any of these names?

Thank you for your reply Slowhands. The Isabel Bowery listed is not my Isabelle as mine was getting married in 1893 when the other one was being born. Hannah/Anna is the Spanish lady Anna Ramos who married Thomas Henry Bowery and I believe could be related to my Isabelle. My main problem is that there has been some name changes from Bowery/Bowry to Ballinger and back again and I wonder if this was fairly common in those days. I wouldn't want to be convincing myself that a certain person was my relative when they are not connected at all which is why I hope that someone in the Bowery or Ballinger families might know something. One of my Isabelle's children remembers being sent to visit a "foreign" lady in the Forest and was told to call her Aunt.
I have just received a marriage certificate for Rosa Bowry and John Hughes for 1873 and the names of the witnesses are William Manns and Emma Bowry. Her name also appeared on another marriage in 1870 of Julia Ann Bowry to Jacob Whitehouse. Funnily enough the other witness to that marriage was a William Hughes who might be the father of John Hughes as his name was William. Rosa Bowry had a sister Julia and both marriages give their father as John Bowry so it looks like it's Rosa's sister but I haven't come across an Emma Bowery in my research, only Emily, so that's another lead I shall have to follow in the search for my Isabelle. Thanks again for your help.

There seem to be several families with connections with France, Spain, Gibraltar etc. was this due to the fact that there was busy shipping traffic up and down the Bristol Channel?

Hi,I assume that you have the marriage certificate for ELIZABETH BOWERY BALLINGER to JOSEPH MANNS.They state that they are Widow & Widower.
Elizabeth says her father is JOHN BOWERY.
My interest, well I believe that the JOHN BALLINGER that elizabeth is living with is my 3x Gt Uncle, born in Cranham,GLS. to BENJAMIN BALLINGER & ELIZABETH CAUSON.Also no marriage yet found for this couple.
I wish I also had more infomation on John & Elizabeth as it will complete this line for me.
With regards Rita [nee BALLINGER.]

Thank you for your replies and the lists of Ballingers etc. I see that Emma Bowery is with a different Bowery family so I wonder if I have been looking at the wrong one, but there are probably more than one Emmas around.
As for the Ballingers, there are plenty of them around too. Elizabeth Bowery Ballinger married Joseph Manns and she was a Widow but I haven't been able to find a previous marriage. According to the census Elizabeth Bowery was single when she was a servant for John Ballinger in 1851 and 1861, she married Joseph Manns in February 1871 which means that if she did previously marry and was widowed it would have to be between 1861 and 1871. She could, of course, have said that she was widowed when she hadn't been married. I wonder when John Ballinger died.
I am beginning to wonder if I will ever find the right family, I shall have to keep looking.
