George TIPPINS marries Rhoda MEEK and Ellen MASON (General)

by reporter, Monday, March 22, 2010, 22:18 (5439 days ago)

Just a narrative for researchers of Tippins, Meeks and Masons.....additions, corrections and comments welcomed, however!

George Tippins 1865 and son Fred were visiting Noah Mason in 1901, George's spouse Rhoda Meek having died 1890.

George marries Ellen Mason, daughter of Noah, in 1902 Bedwelty. She already had children Charlotte, George, Gertrude and Weston, by unknown partner/s, but they were being "provided for by father of children" (1901 census). Perhaps a clue here is Weston's middle name of Hartley?

On the 1911 census these children are listed with surname "-", beneath "Tippins" - so could be interpreted as dittos, or not knowns!

On 1911 children of George and Ellen are Frank aged 6, Elsie aged 4, Jessie aged 2 and twins Olive and Gladys, aged 10 weeks. Frank, Olive and Gladys are crossed out, however. This might refer to the "number of children died =3" on the record, but another researcher has Gladys marrying a Jack Johnson in Abertillery

George was a 1st cousin, and Ellen a 2nd cousin of mine........

Very interesting !! Unfortunately I have not noted the source, but I have Ellen Mason with unmarried partner George Mason 1871, son of Benjamin Mason & Melinda Davies as parents of Florence Evelyn Mason. I was not aware of the marriage to George Tippins. On the 1881 Census George Mason was shown as Deaf & Dumb, as was his 3 sisters. This goes along with Phil's entry :

Noahs Daughter Ellen was my Dads grt Grandmother,it is beleaved Ellen married one of Noahs brothers(Benjamin) sons who was deaf and dumb as were several of their offspring :

Could you possibly post the 1901 & 1911 Census entries you speak of.

George Tippins, George Mason & Ellen Mason above were each 7th cousins twice removed of mine.

Hi Jim

I too, have Ellen Mason as mother of Florence Evelyn, as well as these new ones - but I don't have any evidence of George Mason being the "guilty party". It would be another inter-link, as this George was a 3rd cousin......

Really good fun, as my wife's ancestors were Masons from Over Wyre in Lancashire, and there were millions of them, just as inter-related!

Alice MASON of Brierley b 1872/1873

by rachaelw @, Wednesday, March 30, 2011, 16:22 (5066 days ago) @ jimashton

Alice MASON, daughter of Benjamin and Milinda (probably written wrong on the census and should be Malinda, as she went on to have a daughter with my Great-Grandfather Henry Aaron Simmonds who they named Ada Malinda, also think her Grandmother may have been Malinda Mason) as below in 1881 census:

(Sorry I realise there is a big previous thread but couldn't post a reply).

1881
Benjamin Mason abt 1843 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Head Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire
Milinda Mason abt 1845 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Wife Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire
Alice Mason abt 1873 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire
Edwin Mason abt 1879 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Son Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire
Eliza Mason abt 1867 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire
Ellen Mason abt 1869 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire s
Ernest Mason abt 1876 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Son Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire
George Mason abt 1871 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Son Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire
Lewis Mason East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Son Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire
Meada Mason abt 1879 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire

I wonder what relation Alice would have been to Winifred Mason/Foley, if any?
I have read over the threads and there is so much info, and so many Masons that I'm now confused as to which Benjamin is which!

I had bought one of Winifred's books a while ago but hadn't got round to reading it yet, would be interested to see if there is any connection.

The Masons lived in Brierley, my Great-Grandfather married Alice, who died in 1910. He then married Mabel Mills (my Great-Grandmother) who also lived in Brierley (daughter of Daniel & Henrietta Mills). I have found many relatives in Brierley alone, which I believe is one long stretch of road where the Swan Inn still stands.

Any information gratefully received!

Rachael

My Family Tree software works out my relationship to anyone in it. Alice Mason would be my 7th cousin twice removed.

It also has the ability to be able to nominate anyone - temporarily - as the source and to then work out the relationship from that person to anyone else in my Family Tree. Having done that, Alice Mason 1872 was the 1st cousin twice removed of Winifred Mary Foley nee Mason born 25 Jul 1914.

George TIPPINS 1865 Ruardean Hill

by jimashton @, Wednesday, February 01, 2012, 16:06 (4758 days ago) @ slowhands

Slowhands

You got me a tad confused with this entry. I have Francis Tippins & Louise Cooksey in my family tree. I had the 1861,1881,1891 & 1901 Census details for them, but not 1871. Having seen your entry I have just looked it up in Ancestry and my summary from the entry is :

1871 Census
Thomas Tippins 19 Head Coal Miner East Dean
Elizabeth 17 wife Ruardean
Letitia 64 mother widow 64 East Dean
Nehemiah Baldwin nephew 10 1871 Census
Francis Tippins Head 36 Miner East Dean
Louisa wife 34 East Dean
William son 13 East Dean
John son 10 East Dean
George son 7 East Dean
James son 4 East Dean
Charles daughter crossed out and altered to son 1 East Dean
George Watts Boarder 26 Miner East Dean

Thomas Tippins 19 head is the brother of Francis Tippins. He married Elizabeth Wilce 1853 on 6 Mar 1871. Francis & Thomas Tippins were 2 of the 11 children of William Tippins 1807 & Letitia Jenkins 1807. Francis & Thomas Tippins sister Sarah Tippins 1829 married Timothy Baldwin 1832 on 13 Mar 1858. Sarah died in 1867. The Nehemiah Baldwin nephew is the son of Timothy Baldwin & Sarah nee Tippins. Nehemiah married Sarah Ann Dance in 1881 and emigrated to US in 1886. Nehemiah and wife Sarah in US Census 1900 - living Felix, Grundy, Illinois. Sarah listed as having had 9 children, none living.

In my family tree as part of the family of Francis Tippins & Louise Cooksey I had both a Charlotte 1870 & Charles 1870. As Charlotte appears in the 1881 Census and I have her as married to Enoch Preece I am going to delete Charles Tippins from the family. If anyone knows better please let me know and I can re-instate him.

In answer to Ossie if Charles Tippins 1870 does exist as a son of Francis Tippins & Louise he would be the brother of the George Tippins 1863 in this thread and 3rd cousin twice removed of Winifred Mary Mason born 25 Jul 1914 who married Sydney Foley.
