Inn at Chapel Hill (General)
by Valmai Selman, Sunday, April 04, 2010, 08:19 (5426 days ago)
My Gt Grandfather was Innkeeper at an Inn at Brookside, Chapel Hill, Tintern in 1881. I have been unable to find a name for this Inn or old photos showing it. Does anyone have any information on the original name of an Inn thought to have been on the site of what is now The Cherry Tree? Valmai Selman

On the 1881 Welsh Census Frederick ANDERSON was described as an Inn Keeper living at Brook Side, Chapel Hill, Monmouth. After much searching a local correspondent suggested that there was a group of cottages (since demolished) situated alongside Angiddy Brook, Brookside, Chapel Hill which, at one time, housed an Inn called The Globe. I continue to look for verification of this fact but can find no information on The Globe, hence my original post. Valmai

Built in approx 2006 follows on from -
In 2004 Planning Application
M 10399: Erection of 4 dwelling houses, The Old Globe, Chapel Hill, Tintern
Recommendation: Refuse
Objections on grounds that;
It is an inappropriate development on the site.
There are too many houses, which will create a bad visual effect.
Parking and access to main road are poor.
There are concerns about Leat and the culvert, which runs underneath proposed development.
Anne Howe was concerned about the planning application for the old Globe site saying that the previous
developer had removed the roof and consequently the building had seriously deteriorated. Various planning
applications had been rejected and the site had now been sold and the new owner wanted to build four terraced
cottages requiring eight parking spaces. This indicated that off site parking for visitors that would lead to potential
problems driving through the area. She asked that the council reject the application. Anne Howe further requested
that any future plans would be for a building within the footprint of the original cinema. The councillors replied that
the views of Mrs Howe and of six further letters urging rejection would be taken into account when the application
was considered.
