William Barnard (or Barnett) 1800 (General)

The primary purpose of this message is to document the fact that John BARNARD & Deborah PARSONS had a son William, and secondly, to identify him with the William who married Sophia TRIGG. My apologies for its length but I wish to draw together several strands that may not otherwise be available to fellow researchers.

The Mitcheldean parish register has baptisms for ten children of John & Deborah but the entry for 19 Dec 1800 reads
William son of John BARNARD and his wife baptised.
In the context of the register there is little doubt that John & Deborah are referred to here but the transcription on this site cannot potray the context in the same way, nor does it have the words ‘and his wife’.

John & Deborah were married 30 Jan 1789 at Blaisdon and settled at Lining Wood Top above Mitcheldean on extra-parochial land. By the time of the Second Report of Dean Forest Commissioners 1st May 1834 (British Library: House of Commons Sessional Papers) John and his family had a total of eight parcels of land including two houses. One house was on plot 589 in the name of John BARNETT, senior, and the other on 588 in the name of Jonathan BARNETT. The Report contains a map and it is easy to identify today’s Lining Wood Cottage as being in the same location.

John made a Will dated 7 Sept 1839, shortly before his death. It is from this Will that I know that John & Deborah had a son William.
John bequeaths to his son Thomas BARNARD , his daughter Elizabeth and his son William. In particular, he bequeathes land and dwellinghouse to William.

He also refers to ‘my late son Jonathan’s widow’ – I am descended from this Jonathan who had died in the March of that year.

I believe it is this William BARNARD who married Sophia TRIGG 1 Oct 1825 at Abenhall. They appear at Lining Wood in the 1841 census with family James, Timothy, William, Eliza & Hannah.
They are also witnesses to the marriage of William’s sister-in-law Sarah DEWFIELD/DUDFIELD/DUTFIELD – the said Jonathan’s widow – when she married Elisha HALE in October 1839.
