William Barnard (or Barnett) 1800 (General)

by braillemaker, Wednesday, April 07, 2010, 09:57 (5423 days ago)

The primary purpose of this message is to document the fact that John BARNARD & Deborah PARSONS had a son William, and secondly, to identify him with the William who married Sophia TRIGG. My apologies for its length but I wish to draw together several strands that may not otherwise be available to fellow researchers.

The Mitcheldean parish register has baptisms for ten children of John & Deborah but the entry for 19 Dec 1800 reads
William son of John BARNARD and his wife baptised.
In the context of the register there is little doubt that John & Deborah are referred to here but the transcription on this site cannot potray the context in the same way, nor does it have the words ‘and his wife’.

John & Deborah were married 30 Jan 1789 at Blaisdon and settled at Lining Wood Top above Mitcheldean on extra-parochial land. By the time of the Second Report of Dean Forest Commissioners 1st May 1834 (British Library: House of Commons Sessional Papers) John and his family had a total of eight parcels of land including two houses. One house was on plot 589 in the name of John BARNETT, senior, and the other on 588 in the name of Jonathan BARNETT. The Report contains a map and it is easy to identify today’s Lining Wood Cottage as being in the same location.

John made a Will dated 7 Sept 1839, shortly before his death. It is from this Will that I know that John & Deborah had a son William.
John bequeaths to his son Thomas BARNARD , his daughter Elizabeth and his son William. In particular, he bequeathes land and dwellinghouse to William.

He also refers to ‘my late son Jonathan’s widow’ – I am descended from this Jonathan who had died in the March of that year.

I believe it is this William BARNARD who married Sophia TRIGG 1 Oct 1825 at Abenhall. They appear at Lining Wood in the 1841 census with family James, Timothy, William, Eliza & Hannah.
They are also witnesses to the marriage of William’s sister-in-law Sarah DEWFIELD/DUDFIELD/DUTFIELD – the said Jonathan’s widow – when she married Elisha HALE in October 1839.

I guess it was the son Charles of William PHELPS & Sophia TRIGG who went on to marry Hannah BARNARD, daughter of William BARNARD & Sophia TRIGG?
Actually, I think not, judging from the marriage certificate for Charles & Hannah, Hannah was illegitimate.

Sophia TRIGG & Maria TRIGG 1790-1806

by braillemaker, Friday, April 09, 2010, 09:11 (5421 days ago) @ slowhands

Slowhands, I've looked at the parish records on this site - using Advanced Search - and there were only two cases where William BARNARD and Ann BARNARD were witnesses to a marriage. Both were at Hope Mansell and in both cases the bride was a TRIGG.
We should perhaps include two marriages where the witnesses were William & Ann(e) Barnett. These both have TRIGG grooms.
I'm not familiar with the TRIGG families and I wonder if there is a relationship between these that might clarify which Sophia TRIGG married William BARNARD in 1825?

Sophia TRIGG & Maria TRIGG 1790-1806

by jimashton @, Friday, April 09, 2010, 16:49 (5420 days ago) @ braillemaker

Hi Braillemaker

The 3 Trigg marriages you have listed that William and Ann Barnett witnessed are siblings, all children of Benjamin Trigg 1759 & Priscilla Welch 1759. Maria is (I think) Anna Maria Trigg 1799, the others are James 1782 & Richard 1793. My connection here is another sibling George 1796 married Lucy Marfell 1797, 22 July 1816, Newland Witness_1: Jonathan Marfell Witness_2: Maria Trigg. Lucy Marfell was the daughter of John Marfell 1769 & his first wife Elizabeth Roberts 1769. This marriage also at one stage caused dubiety on another thread as to which Benjamin Trigg was the father of George Trigg, resolved by the will of John Marfell. This was posted in relation to the thread mentioned.

To add to the confusion, Benjamin Trigg and Priscilla Welch also had a son William Trigg 1802 who married Ann Dean 1806 in 1829. Benjamin Trigg and Priscilla also had a daughter Ann, but I cannot find that she married a William Barnett/Barnard!! indeed I cannot find a confirmed marriage for her, although there are a number of possibilities.

Could you do me a favour and post the 1841 Census you mention.

I had been assuming that was Sophia's death until yesterday when I checked FreeBMD - they have 1850 Oct-Dec Westbury-on-Severn Age 11

Sophia TRIGG 1806 -1850 ?

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Friday, April 09, 2010, 20:14 (5420 days ago) @ braillemaker

I can see Volume 11 not age 11 on Ancestry....

Name: Sophia Barnett
Year of Registration: 1850
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Westbury On Severn
County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 11

FreeBMD says :-

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page

Deaths Dec 1850 (>99%)
------------------------------------------------------------
BARNETT Sophia Westbury on Severn 11 372

and I'm "sure" no corresponding BENNETT, so I think our transcription may also be the right one for Sophia.

Hi Braillemaker

I am inclined to think you are right.

However, relating to the other postings to your thread, we appear to have more than one Sophia Trigg - 2 marriages within 2 years. So to add to the debate, it could be that the Sophia Trigg who married William Barnard was the Sophia baptised 3 Jul 1803 mother Margaret father Thomas. I think it has been established that Margaret Trigg then married Thomas Evans in 1807 so perhaps he was the father in 1803.

William Barnard (or Barnett) 1800

by braillemaker, Thursday, April 08, 2010, 18:35 (5421 days ago) @ jimashton

You're quite right Jim, we have a choice. I haven't actually entered any parents for Sophia Trigg although I had assumed a birth of ~1805.
However, the 1851 census has Sophia Phelps as 44; 1861 as 55; this site has her burial at age 60 in 1866 and FreeBMD has her death age 60 in 1866. So it is reasonable to assume Sophia Phelps nee Trigg was born 1806.
Sophia Barnard/Barnett was appears in the 1841 census but in 1851 William is a widower. However, there doesn't seem to be a record of her death or burial.

Well Jim, looks like the two Sophia Trigg's are sorted! With the help of Nancy Roberts.
Sophia TRIGG, 1803, to Margaret HILL and Thomas TRIGG marries William BARNARD 1825. Sophia's mother subsequently marries John Goode 1825 and we find her in the 1841 census with William & Sophia.
Sophia BARNETT died 1850.

Sophia TRIGG 1806 to (unmarried) Mimey (possibly Jemima) TRIGG marries William PHELPS 1827.
Sophia PHELPS died 1866.

Jim, you said you couldn't find a marriage for Ann TRIGG 1784 daughter of Benjamin & Priscilla. Was there a reason for ruling out:

Still trying to work out their witnessing of William PHELPS & Sophia TRIGG.
