The stay in New York would have been with his future brother-in-law (James Beard). The two of them went out to USA to meet up with Arthur Eagles, who had emigrated along with another brother, to seek work. Beard was a cabinet maker and Eagles was a carpenter.
James & Frank booked to travel on Titanic but cancelled due to cabin being in line with engines. Travelled 10 days later on White Star Line ship 'Baltic'. My aunt has James's diaries from that trip.
I guess that the entry into the UK at Southampton would have been when James and Frank came back home. James Beard got married in 1917 so it would have been in the 20's / 30's (probably former) that Frank vanished.
