Looking at this newspaper cutting - the surname could be BAYLESS - there is

1861 census
East Dean

Thomas BAILLIES - age 26, Iron Miner (Thomas BAYLISS m Mary Elizabeth GRIFFITHS - June Qtr 1855 Westbury S)
Mary E - 24
Harriet - 3
Mary Ann - 1

Abbenhall baptisms:

Mary Anne BAYLIS - 4 March 1860 - Thomas (Labourer) and Mary
Ann BAYLIS - 28 March 1858 - Thomas (Mason) and Mary (is this Thomas c1836 father Thomas?)

Looking at the BAYLIS in Abbenhall (children of Thomas & Mary) there are quite a few listed from 1850 onwards - including an Emily 16 April 1854 and later on in 1855 was buried)

Richard : 8 September 1850, Edwin 8 September 1850, George 10 November 1850, Harriet - 27 September 1857, Mary Ann - 28 March 1858, buried 2 April 1859 - another Mary Ann - christened 4 March 1860 - so obviously the named a new daughter after the one they lost. Can't find Emily Jane

Sometimes Thomas is a Stonemason and other times a Labourer.

On the CLDS - 1881 Census - America

There is a Thomas BAYLISS in Kansas age 44 c 1837, Stonemason with a Son William age 17 also born in England and a younger son born in the States.

Getting confusing with two Thomas BAYLIS and possible two Mary's

ChrisW reply i.e. Thomas BAYLISS married Mary Elizabeth GRIFFITHS June Qtr 1855 Westbury S - see 1861 census, Thomas BAILLIES and Mary E

I notice Emily was buried in a Methodist Church - if the family were/or became Methodists before they left England, not sure where records are kept.

'Slowhands' previous notes Civil Registration 1837-1874 - 5 April 2009 - 'There was no penalty for not registering a birth or death - and about third are missing from these early records'

Hello - I am the person in America researching the above. I just registered with the Little Dean forum and I'm not real comfortable with how it is used.

Your posting appears to be the closest to what I'm looking for, but I need to ask a question, since I am not at all familiar with how your country's records are maintained. Are births registered showing the actual birth month and year, or do they reflect the date they are recorded? The year is correct for our Emily's birth, but the month is different.

We have been trying to find information on her mother for years to no avail. I'm hoping this is the correct one.

Thank you
