Looking at the BAYLIS in Abbenhall (children of Thomas & Mary) there are quite a few listed from 1850 onwards - including an Emily 16 April 1854 and later on in 1855 was buried)

Richard : 8 September 1850, Edwin 8 September 1850, George 10 November 1850, Harriet - 27 September 1857, Mary Ann - 28 March 1858, buried 2 April 1859 - another Mary Ann - christened 4 March 1860 - so obviously the named a new daughter after the one they lost. Can't find Emily Jane

Sometimes Thomas is a Stonemason and other times a Labourer.

On the CLDS - 1881 Census - America

There is a Thomas BAYLISS in Kansas age 44 c 1837, Stonemason with a Son William age 17 also born in England and a younger son born in the States.

Getting confusing with two Thomas BAYLIS and possible two Mary's

ChrisW reply i.e. Thomas BAYLISS married Mary Elizabeth GRIFFITHS June Qtr 1855 Westbury S - see 1861 census, Thomas BAILLIES and Mary E

I notice Emily was buried in a Methodist Church - if the family were/or became Methodists before they left England, not sure where records are kept.

'Slowhands' previous notes Civil Registration 1837-1874 - 5 April 2009 - 'There was no penalty for not registering a birth or death - and about third are missing from these early records'
