Hi Chris, Thanks for the information and replying to my post, I have never been able to link the surname really just a guess as one of the son's middle name was Jacob or it could have been Barclay who is named as a relation in Mary's Will cant thank you enough perhaps I will really get over the brick wall. Thanks for your hard work looking into this for me. Some great research, I have all the children as there were bonds left apon the death of Mary so the Christening records confirm this. It was great to find the Marriage of the George and Mary it looks like I have been looking in the wrong area. It seems to be the only marriage that fits in for the time. I have been centralised at the possible connections with the riverboat and possible family members being in chepstow and brockweir more than further afield.

Thank you so very much

Yes I have that information The father John moved to Liverpool he was Captain /Master and died at sea in 1852 and his son John, Williams Bartons brother died in 1857 at sea of Yellow fever it seems shipping was in the family. George and Mary's son all had connections with shipping Robert became Dock Master of Newport. John a Captain/Master and George jnr a shipping agent in Newport. It seem that the family spread outwards across the Country from Robert side of the family also to Liverpool, Staffordshire, Worcestershire and London. But myside only moved up the road to Bargoed, (Mid Glamorgan) ha ha
Thanks for all your time and help on this.

From memory - you will find Gethings in "Men and Armour" listed as mariners. There were also Gethings in the Severn Gorge back this far.

Gething family and Baptist causes

by wbellin, Monday, June 21, 2010, 11:39 (5347 days ago) @ Astley 7

A benefactor of the Baptist college at Pontypool in the 19th century was a George Gething. Is that the same George Gething (md to Jane)who lost two daughters (drowned at Southerndown 21/7/1842)? In the old Baptist chapel at Caerleon, Newport [now two private houses] there was a plaque He was a shipping merchant using the Usk at Caerleon. I would like to know more about the family and their connections.

"Sacred to the memory of Mary aged 15 years and Jane aged 13 years, only daughters of George and Jane Gething of the town of Newport, died 21st July 1842"

Bradney's history of Monmouthshire records the plaque. Then the Bristol Mercury and Daily post, Saturday,July 30 1842 reports

"In our last we breifly alluded to the melancholy dealth, by drowning, of Jane, aged 14, and Mary, aged 16, daughters of George Gething, Esq., of Newport. It appears that the two ladies, with their mother, who was stopping near Southerndown,a watering place, near Bridgend, on the Glamorganshire coast, went to bathe under Dunraven Castle, not far from the Summer-house. The tide being low, the young ladies proceeded beyond the point; and Mrs Gething repeatedly enjoined them to be cautious and not venture beyond the shallow water. They were , however, drawn into the current, and after a brief struggle for existance, both perished! Poor Mrs Gething made every exertion to rescue her children. She went out of her depth and narrowly escaped the fate of her lost offspring. The agonised father immediately reached the scene of the wo, and found his wife in a state of insensibility. The body of Jane aged 14, was soon recovered, but Mary was not found till about half past twelve on Friday morning. ... The afflicted father, wandering in agony beside the treacherous waters, found his beloved child Mary a stiffened corpse the next morning. A verdict of accidental dealth has been returned ..."

Many thanks for so much on the family. I notice that the minister who christened Ann Gething daughter of James Gething and Mary in 1833 was Rev. Thomas Thomas. According to an 1871 history of the Independents in Wales (Hanes Eglwysi Annibynol Cymru), Rev. Benjamin Evans followed Thomas Thomas as minister and finally William Gethin (Gething on Caerleon.net) who came from Bristol. On Caerleon.net the christening by William Gething was that of Richard James in 1836. According to the 1871 history, William Gething sold the old chapel and built a new one, but there was reliance on a loan which was made by Mrs Powell, widow of a Mr T Powell. In her will she left that money to a nephew and on her death the nephew took possession of the chapel and locked it up. With this the cause failed. The history does not say what happened to Rev. William Gething.

Dear Person
I live locally to St Woolos cemetery, Newport. Regarding your mention of the 2 daughters of George Gething (1798-1867), namely Mary (b.19 Jun 1827) and Jane (born 16 Dec 1828), who both died in 1842, they are buried in St Woolos cemetery alongside George Gething, his eldest son George Barclay Gething & Jane, wife and the mother. I have images of the headstones if you are interested.

Hi Mark

Thanks so very much, I would love the images that would be so kind. I went in search of the gravestones earlier this year at St Woolos, But ran out of time on the Gethings. I was looking for the Swaffin/Patterson (Mary Ann Daughter and Son In Law to George graves who I could find.) That is so kind willing to share the images, Thank you. Are you a relation of the the Gethings?. Would you have also the plot numbers or where they are situated in St Woolos. I know that they may have been removed from the church yard of St Woolos to make way for the road around the church but there does not seem to be reords of the removals. This is very exciting thanks again

Gethin family of Chapel Hill

by Lisa Astley @, Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 23:03 (4518 days ago) @ unknown

Hi all
looking for informaion on my family the Gethin's from Chapel Hill, Tintern. I know that they lived in that area about 1780's before moving to Newport. They ran the river boats and where iron merchants George Gething Married mary Jacob in Bristol in 1790's but believe Mary lived in the area not Bristol. I have followed the family through to Newport where the Grandson Robert became Dock Master. I have strong believe that they have connections with the sea and local public houses as when they lived in Newport. I have looked on the Parish records and my family can be found through the baptisms to 1739 but would love to know where they lived ect and where they may have been burried.

Thank you
