Burials in Ledbury 1800s (General)

by bramcor, Thursday, April 29, 2010, 04:16 (5400 days ago)

An unexpected event in Scotland is taking us briefly from Australia to the UK, & I am grabbing the opportunity on the return journey to take a day trip from Birmingham to Ledbury to see the area where some of my Dally/Dalley/Dallow ancestors lived.

Is it likely that the Ledury Parish Church records on this site would mean the people were buried in the church graveyard there? I am hoping to find the graves of various Dally family members (will include Godsall, Skinner, Lewis, Edwards through marriage)in the 1800s.

Most of all I would like to find the graves of my 4xg-grandparents, James Dally, possibly died 1840, & his wife, Mary Buffin, who possibly died 1837.

Would appreciate any information from people with local knowledge. My time in Ledbury will be short but I look forward to seeing the streets where the various families lived & gaining some idea of what life was like back then.

Thanks...Judy

The Ledbury Graveyard is some distance from the church, There are burials in the Church but are very old, the graveyard is at the bottom of New Street close to the Full Pitcher Public House.

The church is in Church Street / Church Lane from the A449 road it is behind the police station or find the Market House on stilts in the main street and follow the cobbled lane to the top and to the church.

Thank you, Billingham. I don't know that we will have time to walk out to the cemetery at the end of New Street (I saw it on a map & thought it might be a bit far for us) - will just have to be satisfied to walk the streets I've discovered from various censuses, mostly the Homend & Bye Street (which I believe was also Bishop Street). No idea where the houses were - probably don't exist anymore, anyway. I don't know how to follow the enumerator's steps to determine a direction, even if I knew which end to start from.

Thanks again...Judy

There is very little New development in Ledbury town centre, so I would assume that most of the houses should still exist. You can easily park outside the cemetery or it's about a ten minute walk from The Homend, walk to church will take you less than five minutes from the market house. Ledbury is very small even with the New developements on the town outskirts. Are travelling by train or do you have a vehicle?
I am sorry that I no longer live in Ledbury other wise I would have met you and assisted with your search. Had to relocate to the New Forest with work commitments.
Enjoy your visit it really is a lovely town.

Thank you, Billingham...you give me hope that Ledbury will retain much of the flavour of an earlier time. We will be arriving by train from Birmingham & then intend walking from the station, though I see on various maps (including some excellent "real-life" type maps that have let me walk the route already via the computer) that there are bus stops along the HOmend. WE figured the walk to the Market House & then to the church would be something we could handle.
For me it will be the highlight of a journey that began when I started reearching our family history - in Birmingham I will see the area where my father's ancestors lived & in Ledbury it will be the turn of my mother's family. I am delighted to have been given information here to help (not just in the forum, of course. The parish records have been invaluable).
