I am trying to find the birth of Elizabeth HUGGINS 1802.

She was married in Abenhall to Thomas MARSHALL in 1830.

She had 6 children to him then Died on the 19th Jan 1841 aged 38. I have seen her gravestone in Little Dean Cemetery, near the corner of the church by the path, and have a copy of her death certificate.

I have been unable to find her birth and the names of her parents.

As HUGGINS is not a common name I can find very few possibilities for her. I have searched the FOD parish records and can not find her.

Out of Gloucestershire I have 2 possibilities,

The first is 17 Jul 1803 in Stanton st Quintin, Wiltshire. This date does not fit unless her age is incorrect on the death certificate. Can't find any record of these parents moving to Abenhall.

A better fit is

21 dec 1802 in Hocking Norfolk. Those parents died in Hocking, so also did not appear to have moved to Abenhall.

There are HUGGINS in the Forest of Dean, so my first thoughts are that she is more likely to belong to one of them, although I can find no link.

Does anyone have any information on Abenhall, could she have moved there as a servant? it looks like a very small place.

Unfortunately she did not live long enough to make the 1841 census, and the marriage parish record does not state the names of her parents.

Any thoughts on where I should look next would be appreciated.

Kind Regards Julie

This looks like it could be the baptism for her in 1799 at Newent. The distance from Newent to Abenhall is only about 7 miles.

I would not be too concerned with the slight difference in the calculation of her age. Many could not read and write in that period and did not have a piece of paper filed away with details of their birth.

You sometimes get family groups by using the Advanced Search on the FOD site and put say Abenhall and check for HUGGINS witnesses....

i.e. Richard & Mary HUGGINS were witnesses at a wedding in Abenhall in 1835 and also an Alice HUGGINS married in Abenhall with a Sarah HUGGINS as a witness.

? A - Alice HUGINS was christened in Ruardean 22 April 1810 John & Ann.

two more children christened at Newent : John & Ann

Hannah - 14 March 1802 and John - 6 May 1804

Thanks for this information, and from admin, it always seemed to me more likely she was from the area, will follow up on both. I especially had never thought about looking for witnesses, who are often relatives. thanks.
