White family in Lydney (General)
by unknown, Wednesday, May 05, 2010, 16:21 (5394 days ago)
Is anyone researching the White family in Lydney. I am particularly interested in the time before 1864 when my grandfather Charles David White left Lydney with his wife Susan nee Wingate and daughter Rose.
Charles parents were James (1798 to 1859) and Harriet nee Robins (1800 to 1870). Charles is described in the 1841 census as a Tin Plate Dust Boy and in the 1851 census as Tinner. His father James is described in various census and documents as Mariner, Waterman and Coal Shipper.
I have a lot more information about the family but would love to contact someone else who is researching them and may be related to me.

My Great, Great, Great Grandmother was a Mary White who married James Stibbs at Lydney in
1809. Their daughter Esther was my Great Great Grandmother.
Esther who was born in 1815 married Alexander Sheppard, but was widowed when Alexander died
in 1851. She then married my Great Great Grandfather Charles Nelmes at Lydney.
I have been unable to establish who Mary's parents were. Have you any suggestions please?

One clue is the witness : William WHITE who is a witness at the marriage of Esther STIBBS to Alexander SHEPHERD - 22 December 1832 in Lydney, the other witness is Elisabeth JONES.

married George SHEPHERD - at Lydney - 22 August 1840 - and her father James STUBBS occupation Navigator

Hi MPG,
glad to see you back onboard, hope all is well with you.
I must apologise for not posting my efforts, as poor as they are, when researching this post late yesterday. I thought of you M as it seems to me the witnesses are indeed key, sorry for not posting sooner.
For what they're worth here are all my findings on this query, was trying to find some common / useful ground but not a lot I'm afraid, the Whites seem to be an elusive family (altho I deliberately only searched STIBBS not Stubbs etc). Hopefully this info may help you or others, apologies for any duplication, this is what I found from the PRs and also FamilySearch etc.

From Familysearch which is my only references at this time, and in this instance one of those "odd" individual returns they occasionally throw-up, so unable to see the rest of this Census page, I wonder if other family members are on it ??

White family in Lydney (also SHEPPARD & WARLOCK)

Back to the marriage of Mary White to James Stibbs in 1809.
Searching FreeBMD suggests Stibbs is a rare surname in Glos, it seems associated more with Stroud and especially Bristol, but not the FoD. Ditto struggling to find our family in the 1841 census anywhere ?

Who are the WARLOCK witnesses ?, this is the only PR I can find for this surname, which looks like our couple.
