Why the "wanderings" ? (General)

by Jerry Hale, Saturday, June 12, 2010, 09:55 (5356 days ago)

Hello all,

Here are two family groups. The first group is speculation. The second group is my own and proven. I thought the wandering between Newland and Coleford in the first group meant I was probably wrong about it being just one family but then I notice that my own group varies even more, Coleford, Parkend, Newland, Coleford and finally Drybrook. What shall I make of it? I know that all of the chapels didn't exist at once but I don't have a "time line" for them. Then Aaron (1805) was baptized twice, on the 20th and on the 29th of Oct 1805. Is that unusual?

I want to say, what a wonderful resource, I couldn't get to first base without it.

Thank you,

Jerry Hale

Aaron HALE - 29 October 1805, Coleford, parents Aaron HALE & Elizabeth (address Lane End)

And your notes: Aaron HALE m Elizabeth EVANS - Newland 25 May 1786 is the most appropriate.

I don't know where your family are 'hiding' in census returns - tried all combinations, so far no luck.

What male line (Son of Aaron & Elizabeth) do you decend from? see if I can find him.

When Aaron HALE married Elizabeth MORGAN in 1825, one witnesses was Hannah HALE which doesn't help as there as a number of Hannah's on census - or could be Hannah HALE 1801 - mother Elizabeth

Using the Advanced Search for witnesses at weddings - Aaron HALE and Elizabeth HALE attended a wedding in Newland, 1 December 1832 to William MORGAN (obviously Elizabeth's relation) and Ann PROSSER.

And there are much earlier AARON Hale's in the 18th century witness at weddings.

2 December 1756 - Welsh Bicknor - William MORRIS & Ann BANFORD - witness Aaron HALE
4 June 1767 - English BICKNOR - John BANTON & Sarah HARRIS - witness Aaron HALE
9 August 1772 W-O-S : William HALE married Ann RICHARD - witnesses Aaron HALE

I have an Ann Prosser born and baptised 1805, father is William or James Prosser. But I have nothing else about her apart from her name and date of birth on a scrap of very old paper along with the dates of birth of all her siblings (eight siblings in addition to her). Could this be the Ann Prosser you are wanting? I also have some Morgans but don't know whether they are connected. They are also related to the Hales through the Rook family but in a later generation. My Prossers do have a definite connection with Lane End, Coleford but also with Llandogo and further into Monmouthshire and Wales.

Coleford was a Chapelry of Newland before it became a parish of its own.

It is not uncommon to find records in a Chapelry and then an apparent duplicate in Newland's records.

What is a Chapelry?

A Chapelry had a similar status to a township but was so named as it had a chapel which acted as a subsidiary place of worship to the main Parish Church....

The 'wandering' I would imagine was to obtain work. The family still basically lived in the same area as there is only about 5 miles from one place they lived to the next place, the distance could actually be less depending upon if they lived in the centre or the outskirts of the places.
