Bakery in FOD (General)

by MJL @, Monday, June 21, 2010, 20:02 (5346 days ago)

Does anyone know of a bakery/bakehouse in the area in about 1910.
My father told me he was taken to visit relatives when he was very young, he said he could stand under the ovens to keep warm.
My family names are Gardner and Kent, but there may be others too.
Regards,
MJL

No idea at all, I would think that every village had one or more bakeries at that time, I was just hoping that I would recognize a name or place.

Thanks slowhands, none of the names ring a bell, I've tried to find it on the Historical Directories website but no luck there either.

On this Web site.

Kelly's Directory 1879 of the Forest of Dean and Surrounding Areas

These records list many shop owners but relate to earlier years than you mentioned. You may however be able to pick up something from them.

Thank you forest, although my family names of Gardner and Lane crop up as bakers, perhaps they worked at the places you have mentioned.
Wherever it was I think my father must have been captivated by the smell of fresh baked bread, at the age of 14 he was apprenticed to a baker for four years and later become a Master Baker.

You are right that villages had bakery - My great grand mother Sarah Jane FISHPOOL is stated as Baker on the 1911 census Working at home At Grape Cottages Gorsley. This bakery was continued by her son Ernie and I remember him baking in the 50's.

I can remember 2 bakers shops from the 1950's. One in High St, Drybrook, called Smiths Bakers, and one at Morse Cross, Morse Rd, owned by the Hunt family, on the road from Nailbridge to Ruardean.
Smiths Bakers in Drybrook delivered bread etc, to many places around the Forest, including Micheldean, Longhope, and Huntley.

In Lydbrook there was Reg Fear Baker at Viaduct Stores, Beards Bakery, Central Lydbrook. On Joys Green Bert Harvey was the baker at the Post Office. My husband's first job when he left School in 1947 was helping make the bread, he delivered it around the Moorwood and the Coppice with a donkey which had baskets known as pots on his sides, when the donkey felt hungary he would put his head around and help himself to a loaf!
