Locating residents of Lensbrook Cottage, Blakeney (General)

by barbarajane @, Friday, July 02, 2010, 19:37 (5335 days ago)

I think I've located the burial records of my greatgrand parents John & Gertrude Cook. They are both buried in Viney Hill. The register reference is P348 in 1/19 in both cases. Does this mean they were buried in the same plot?

John was listed as living in Lensbrook cottage when he passed away. There is also a reference to a Jane Cook, with the same register reference and also living at Lensbrook Cottage until death. I'm trying to confirm if she was a relative & what is the connection.

Is it possible to follow the occupants of this cottage through the census?

Next question. The first record I can find for my grandmother Mary Cook is her wedding certificate at the Wesleyan Church, Newerne Street, Lydney. Her brother, also called John Cook was found to have been unregistered when he applied for his pension. There was also a sister Kate and a brother Arthur, none of which I can trace. I realise some of these records are getting a bit recent, but I have come to a dead end with this line of the tree.

Many thanks
Barbara

??

On the 1901 census for Blakeney - 7 houses from my xGrandparents - William WICKENDEN @ Nibley Mill, there is a family living at an address - LANESBROOK - just one house

Nibley

then LANESBROOK

William INMAN - 53, County Council Labourer, born Awre
Elizabeth INMAN - 43 - born Lydney
Ada INMAN - 9 - born Awre
Rhoda INMAN - 6 - born Awre

coming down towards the centre of Blakeney

Lower Viney

Oldstreet House

Upper Viney

On the 1891 Census - near again to Nibley Mill, where Arthur BENNETT is living in 1891 we have

Just one house

LENSBROOK

Benjamin CALE - 61, Farm Labourer, born Ledbury, Hereford
Sarah CALE - 59 - born Lydney
Tom CALE - 22 - Grocers Asst. Blakeney
John BAILEY - Father - in - Law, Widower, age 90 born Blakeney

just a couple of houses away from Mill Row

-----
FOD records
Gertrude Winifred COOK - 28 July 1950 - age 67 (c1883)
Jane COOK - 10 April 1956 - age 62 (c1894)

John COOK - 1 January 1941 - age 78 (c1863)- Linsbrook Cottage, Lydney (@ Viney Hill)

Death certificates have a column with the heading: Signature, description and residence of informant. This can help. For example, I have one that states, ....... D SMALLWOOD - daughter - present at the death of William John WICKENDEN Nibley Mill, Blakeney Awre.

Thanks for the quick response. When I first posted about my family, the previous response was fantastic and sent me on a long journey with my grandfathers family. But on the Cook(e) side I still have problems. The burial record of my grandmother gives Gertrude Winifred Cooke but the information on the post was for a Gertrude Alice Green and the Green name was only a memory of my mothers and possibly nothing to do with my family at all.

Mary Dorethy Aileen Cooke was married on 12th December 1928. Her age was given as 22. Her residence given as Rodley Manor Farm and her occupation was domestic servant. Her father John Cooke was listed as a farm labourer. She married Worthy Norman Slade Pettiford, who lived at Cross Hands, the collection of cottages on the brow of Highfield Hill, Lydney. They were married at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Newerne by Mr George Ball. The witnesses were Edna and Edith Olive Pettiford. I have no other evidence of Mary's or any other family members existence before this.

Mum said Lensbrook Cottage was down the lane leading off the A48 on the Lydney side of the Viney Hill Crossroads. The family were either farm labourers or domestic servants and my mother went into service at Hurst Farm until the war broke out, when she went to work at Pine-end in Lydney.

in my first reply, I gave a link to previous thread from Admin (just click of the link to call up this up).... which talks about two brothers John & Arthur and sisters Kate & Elsie. Also John Jnr was a Miner, when he tried to claim his Old Age Pension he found that his birth hadn't been registered.......

Worthy Norman Slade Pettisford/Mary Dorothy Aileen COOK - dated 10 January 2006 from Admin - which I assumed is the family are are looking for.

Yes thanks, that's them. I just have this problem with Gertrude. Was her second name Alice or Winifred and was she a Green or identity unknown? Mary was 22 in 1928 so I'm assuming she was born in about 1906 and Gertrude Alice Green was born about 1896 which would have made her 10. Gertrude Winifred dies in 1950 aged 67 which would make her birth year 1883, a much better fit and indicates they are different people, so the big mystery is 'Who is Gertrude Winifred Cook'

Locating residents of Lensbrook Cottage, Blakeney

by Evelyn Waring, Thursday, October 28, 2010, 14:49 (5217 days ago) @ barbarajane

Hi, I also lived in Lensbrook Cottage, but it was over the road from Mrs Cook, Elsie and Arthur, our houses had the same names. Mrs Cook also had a daughter Kate who married a Kear. Arthur died after 1956 because he married and his wife died in April 1956 and he was still alive then. As far as I can remember Arthur and his wife worked in a Carpet Factory in Gloucester. I cannot remember when Mrs Cook died. Her daughter Elsie lived in Westbury-on-Severn in the home there.

Sorry I can't help anymore.

Eve Waring.
