CAM and THACKWELL Families - Dymock and Ledbury areas

by carolejhughes, Monday, July 12, 2010, 20:47 (5325 days ago) @ slowhands

I have plenty of information about these families (from 16th century onwards). What I am trying to find out is if anyone else is researching these names in particular in this area. Thanks for the info though Slowhands. Carole

I should make it clear that I am looking for the family name CAM, not families from the village of Cam

CAM and THACKWELL Families - Dymock and Ledbury areas

by Simona Cam, Tuesday, November 01, 2011, 11:53 (4848 days ago) @ carolejhughes

Hello Carole!

My family name is CAM and I'm from Romania. Overhere this surname is very rare and I'm trying to find out which are it's origins.
During your research have you found any references to Romania, or at least to the eastern part of Europe about this surname?

Many thanks,

Simona

CAM, Meaning of Name

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Tuesday, November 01, 2011, 14:45 (4848 days ago) @ Simona Cam

Hi Simona,
first welcome to this fantastic resource site and forum. It may well be worth you searching this hugely informative site for the Cam/Camm/Chamm/Kam etc names, all of which are shown within the PRs. Don't forget spelling variations such as this often occurred even as recent as the early 20th century. You can search both within this Forum and also via the separate search icon on the lefthand menubar of the site's home page. Hopefully this might give you more information wrt the name.

I suggest that sadly for you it's unlikely that Carole will see your post. If you look at her username on the thread its not appearing as blue, this means she's not been active on the site for over 12 months, in fact her post was 477 days ago as you can see. If the name had been a blue hyperlink you could have sent a private message directly into her home email account, often more effective at getting a reply, but sadly not now as it's been disabled thro lack of use.
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/?Help_FAQ_General_FAQ#faq6

If you try contacting the sites owners (see "Contact Us" in top blue menu bar) its possible they may be able to help you).

Re your Cam surname I suspect from a British viewpoint the more recent Cams/Camms are linked to people living near the two River Cams, the more famous one running through Cambridge in East Anglia and the smaller but perfectly formed one in North Gloucestershire. Indeed this interesting website compiled from 1881 Census Population Distribution Data shows this to be so
http://gbnames.publicprofiler.org/Map.aspx?name=CAMM&year=1881&altyear=1998&...

For researching British surnames this British website can be of interest, as you can see the Camm name is recorded way back in Domesday times. Apparently the word Cam meant "crooked" (as in shape, not personal trait!).
http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/camm

Regarding spelling variations I can well believe the name could also have Asian origins too (Kham ??) which might be particularly relevant for you in Eastern Europe ?.

Hope this helps, good luck, Jeff

(PS Fwiw the most famous Cam I know, speaking as a mechanical engineer, is Sir Sidney Camm, the designer of famous Hawker military aircraft of WW2 such as the Hurricane, which contrary to popular myth re the Spitfire had an equally significant effect in the Battle of Britain).

Cam and Thackwell Families - Dymock and Ledbury areas

by pennyjwood, Thursday, August 19, 2010, 16:15 (5287 days ago) @ carolejhughes

Hi Carol

I am a member of the Cam family and at present I am trying to find out more about my great, great grandfather, Francis Cam who was born in Yeat, Gloucestershire I think on 13 April 1808. He was a case maker, and moved to London where he married Christiana Cheeseman in Newgate. I have a little more information about him, but I would really like to know if his parents were Robert Cam and Elizabeth Wall.

I have more information about his son, George and his descendants and would be happy to share my knowledge (such as it is).

I look forward to hearing from you

Kind regards

Penny (nee Cam)

Hi

Many thanks for your quick reply. Yes these are all my ancestors. I have also noted the wrong spelling of Francis (Franas) and Francis Pam (Cam) who was living with his daughter Christine Colson. I am just looking to confirm whether Robert Cam and Elizabeth Wall were the parents of Francis.

Thankyou again for your interest.

My name is Mike Camm and I am currently trying to tie in my ancestor Robert Cam born I believe between 1810/13. He was married to Mercy Burnell on the 13th May 1836 at St Marys Redcliff Bristol but he lived in Yate and was a Tailor by trade.
I recognise several of the names on your e mail who are ancestors.
Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Just by using the Advanced search for witness at Camm weddings at RedMarley etc - you can get family groups.... for example

Edward MUTLOE married Winefred CAM (Spinster) - 2 January 1779

Brides Residence: Redmarley D'Abitot

witnesses : William SMITH - Mark of Frances CAM

also looking at this website

Redmarly D'Abitot Worcestershire

you will find Winny CAM was a witness to a marriage of Eleanor CAM to Thomas GOODE 3 March 1778

so a connection with Frances/Eleanor/Winefred CAM

Hi Carole, I am a descendant of Louisa Cam of Dymock. Her parents were John & Elizabeth Cam (they died in the 1790's). They were from Claverham, are you related to any of these people? There were 4 sisters I believe, Harriet, Amelia, Elizabeth and Louisa. Look forward to seeing if we have something in common!
