Very Young Witnesses (General)

I couldn't find any new entries for the HOCKADAY family in Lydney, so entered their family doctor's name, MONSELL. I was very surprised to find two of my cousins recorded as Witnesses to his daughter's marriage when they were only 6 years old!
Did this sort of thing happen often?
