Barzillai MEEK Marriages (General)

In answer to -> http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=1644#p27510

To put the record straight the the parents of James Cowmeadow who married Mary Tingle were James and Ann (nee Evans). His parents were William and Elizabeth.

The 1857 census must be in error. Diana Meek appears as a witness on Cowmeadow marriage certificates so she must be a different individual although I can't trace her. Perhaps Hannah changed her name!

I think there is an error in the 1851 recording - and Ancestry's transcription

Thank you for your reponse. It is interesting that Diana is a witness at the marriage of Mary Ann Cowmeadow. She was the daughter,of course, of Hannah Meek (nee Cowmeadow). In this record the father's name is clearly given as Joseph Turner, butcher. I can find no references to him in this website's records. Could he have been Hannah's employer? Sorry to go off the point.

Mary Ann COWMEADOW 1837

Slowhands

I thought I had better add the Marfell element here in connection with the 1851 Census entry for Charlotte Turner.

The Sophia Anne Turner born 1840 mentioned married Jonathon Marfell born 28 Mar 1843 on 15 March 1865 Parish Ch. Hentland, Herefordshire. I have the marriage certificate and her father is shown as James Turner Farmer. Witnesses Henry J Turner & Charlotte Elizabeth Turner, presumably her brother and mother.

I appear to have missed some detail on the 1851 Census entry as I have :

1851 Census Hfd. Peterstow 1976 115a
Charlotte Turner widow 39 Hereford
Sophia 11 Peterstowe
Henery 4 Peterstowe.

I have taken more trouble to record the entries after her marriage to Jonathon Marfell :

1871 Census The Mill House, Walford
Jonathon Marfell 28 Farmer 143 acres 4 men 2 boys. Newent
S.A. wife 30 Peterstow
Thomas H 5 Ross
Wm. E. 3 Ross

Jonathon & Sophia both died in Romford - 1918 & 1922. A number of their children emigrated to Quebec, but moved on some to USA and one to New Zealand. Some remained as their deaths are recorded in Sussex.

Thanks for that. I guess - but will not be recording that Joseph is the father of James Turner & Edward is Charlotte's brother.

However, going back over my records I noted that I hadn't got the detail of Jonathon Marfell's mother Rebecca Wilce 1813 who married Thomas Marfell born 4 Dec 1815 on 12 July 1836 Abenhall - Witneses Miles Wilce & Abia Marfell. I discovered that Rebecca Wilce was baptised 30 Nov 1813 and is in fact the daughter of John Wilce 1765 and Ann Marfell 1771, who of course I had in my family tree. A clue should have been that Rebecca Wilce had a brother Miles 1852 who was a witness.

Thanks again !!

Yes James Marfell born 1819 married Esther James born 1812 on 15 Apr 1846 at Weston under Penyard. Unusually (for a Marfell) I didn't have the 1841 Census entry. Esther's father is shown on the marriage certificate as Joseph James Labourer.

Following James Marfell's marriage, I do have the 1851, 1861, 1871,1881 Census Llangarren 1891 Census Trewin Villa & 1901 Census Ross. He died 26 Sep 1904.

James Marfell was the brother of Thomas Marfell who married Rebecca Wilce as shown in my (amended) previous posting.
