Hale family that lived at the Pludds (General)

by Karl Lamb @, Sunday, February 20, 2005, 12:23 (7249 days ago)

Hi

Looking for information relating to the Hale family that lived at the Pludds (Ploods - sic) during the 18th / 19th / 20th Century. Also looking for information relating to the Bennett family (William Hale(b 1854) married Teresa Bennett (b1861) in NailBridge. Both were my great grandparents.

Also information requested on Gammond and Lamb family in the Hewelsfield area for the 19th Century. The Lamb family owned Harthill Grange and the surrounding farms.

Many Thanks

Edmund Hale b.1804 who married Jane Duberley (b1805) in 1829 was Joseph 1776-1833 and Mary Baldwin's son. They had 5 children Edmund, Mary, Milsom, Ann and Nehemiah that i know of.

Edmund and Jane had 8 children, one of whom was called Edmund b.1852 d.1926 He married Eliza b.1853 and i think had 3 children perhaps 4, one of whom was also called Edmund b.1877 d.1951 he emigrated to New Zealand.

Edmund and Jane's and Edmund b1852 gravestones are in Ruardean churchyard.

Hello,

I have been following this thread with interest as an elderly neighbour of mine is a daughter of Thomas Hale from High Beech. I have spoken to her today and she confirms what she has told me before about her family and that she would like to know more about them. If you think there is a connection please be in touch, "Veda" will be delighted.

Here is what info I have

Tom Hale
1 TOM
2 Alan
3 Johnny
4 Laura
5 Charlotte.

TOM married Caroline (from a Cornish family who had come to the Forest)
They went to Illinois
1 Albert was born in USA
Then Toms father died, and so Tom the eldest son, his pregnant wife Caroline and their son Albert, came back as TOM had inherited the property.
Later children were
2 Frank
3 George
4 Elveda Dolores Caroline (there a story to this name)
5 Joan
6 Joseph
7 John (died as a baby)
8 Frank.

They were a mining family.

I have noticed that some of these names occur elsewhere in the "thread" and if you think there is a connection I will ask Veda for some dates. Veda, who is in her eighties now, knows my hobby is genealogy and has often spoken of both her father's family from High Beech and her mother's family from Truro.

in the 1920 US census there is a Caroline Hale in Illonois, she arrived in 1912 ( she was born in 1855) which seems a tad past child bearing age !

a few more dates might help !

Thank you for your interest,

I believe there may be a link here. Whilst I can't confirm any dates until I see Veda again I have worked it back thus

From memory, Elveda Dolores Caroline was born about 1917.

It was her parents who went to Illonois (1912?), had one child there and returned to UK soon after Tom 's father died (in UK). They then had more children, including Veda, born here.

Veda's father was Tom Hale and so was his father. I will enquire about others who went to Illonois at this time, as she has said in the past that she may have relatives (long lost) still in America, and get back to you. Maybe some stayed behind.

Hello again,

I have been to see Veda again today and we have made the connection with your William Hale (1871 census )

William's brother Tom was born 1855 and he is Veda's ancestor thus-

1901 census High Beech Lodge Civil Parish of East Dean
Thomas Hale Head Coal Miner age 46 b Gloucester(shire?)
Martha Wife 42 b Monmouth
Thomas Son 16 Coal miner b Glos Pludds
Frank Son 14 Coal miner b Glos Pludds
Leonard Son 12 - b Glos Pludds
Laura H. Dau 9 - b Glos Pludds
Allen Son 6 - b Glos Pludds
Johnathan Son 4 - b Glos Pludds
Albert Son 6M - b Glos Pludds.

It is Thomas the eldest son in this family (b 1885) that is Veda's father.
He went to Illinois, where he met and married Olga Maud from Truro Cornwall. Their eldest son Albert was born in America and then Toms father died and the family had to return to the Forest as there was property left to them. When they came home they swapped houses with a family called Eddy who wished to emigrate to USA and this is how they came to be at Joys Green which is another village between Lydbrook and High Beech, Hawsley and The Pludds.

I started her off talking about one of the the names on the 1871 census and she then started to "rattle off" some of the other names and what happened to them -
"Aunty Caroline married a Morgan and they built a big house on Rocks Road Joys Green - its now a shop" and the village Post Office.
"Aunty Charlotte married a Stephens and they lived down the Lime Kilns on Forge Hill. They had two boys Will and Lewis"

It is quite usual for older generation female relatives to be called Auntie even though they are probably Great Aunts. We don't stand on ceremony too much in the Forest.

I mentioned the other Hales on the 1901 census (re message from Slowhands) and she did remember a Kathleen Hale " but she didn't go to Joys Green School. She thinks that family were from Timber Tump (another hamlet in the same area) and mentioned another daughter Merris (or is it spelt Merys) and a son Mostyn Hale.

Then Veda started talking about her brothers and sisters, but I'll leave that for now.

Veda was born 1919 and is a lovely lady to talk to. You wouldn't guess she is 86, she certainly doesn't look it and has a very lively mind. I have some digging to do now as she wants to know about the property that was inherited. Perhaps I'll take her to the Record Office one day - she would enjoy that. I could certainly take her to High Beech House(Lodge) as the present owners are friends of mine.

Hope this is of some interest and use to you.

Both

Sorry I haven't replied, I have been away.

Thanks to you both, I have a lot of related Hale information and I am pulling it all together in a tree at the moment. I'll let you know as soon as this is done and will send it to you.

So far, it looks like most of the information is correct. I need to confirm that Edmund was the brother of my William Hale, but it does seem to fit at the moment.

Slowhands, I was thinking of subscribing to Ancestry.com - any advice on the best of the geneology sites ?

I am also working on a Bennett (Walford) / Hale (Ruardean) / Gammond connection

Best Regards

Hi Karl,

Have you written to Janet Cook - she is also researching Bennetts in Ruardean/Pludds areas. She has an enquiry further down the Forest of Dean message pages. I have been writing to her as there is a link from her Bennet family to my husbands family at The Pludds, Ruardean.

Some counties including Herefordshire (for Walford and Bishopswood) have the National Burial Index online and you might glean some info there. I know there are Bennetts in both those churchyards from my own research.

Back to the Hales now for Veda, I have a photo of the ship that Tom Hale went to America on in 1904 for her and the other details from the ships manifest.

Good luck, keep in touch with your progress, and I'll write if I notice anything locally that may be useful to you if you like.

Bye, May

by Karl Lamb, Friday, March 18, 2005, 10:34 (7223 days ago) @ May

Hi May

I have been in contact with Janet, but at the moment, it looks like a different line of Bennetts. Mine came from the Walford area, and Slowhands was kind enough to do a census search which opened up a whole new line of enquiry.

I am working on the assumption that the Bennetts in the Walford area were related, and will be visiting the churches there over the next few weeks to confirm some things.

When you next talk to Veda, would you mention the names Lillian, Charlotte (Lottie) Eva (died 1904) and Andrew Hale to see if she remembers anything about them. Andrew was adopted by the Lamb family at Harthill Grange in Hewelsfield. They lived at the Pludds, and then moved to (I believe) Stroud. She may also remember their father William Hale, who died in the early 1930's.
Lillian went to live in Bristol and died in the 1980's.

Thanks for your interest and help

Best Regards

Hello Karl,

I have had a word with Veda but nothing new yet. She is thinking about it though. She is still excited because I took her a picture of the ship her father and grandfather sailed to America in, in 1904.

Re- Walford (Bennetts) The late 19C burials have been transcribed and I have access to a copy of that if it may be useful. I also have plan of Walford churchyard before all the old stones were moved.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble. I am going to Walford in a few weeks; it would be great if could let me have the information about the churchyard.

Thanks again

Hi Karl,

the MIs are 25 pages and the churchyard plan is A3.
However, there are 10 Bennetts listed in the Churchyard plot refs.

The transcription I have is 1895 - 1944 and there is only one Bennett in that - Katharine Gladys Bennett of Walford Court died March 4th 1908 age 19.

Might be easier if I pop down to Walford when you are there with the print out.

Meanwhile, I will try to extract some relevant info from the MI's for you, and send that as soon as I get half a chance.
