Hussey/Davies of Lydbrook (General)

by virginiastilby, Monday, February 21, 2011, 19:33 (5093 days ago)

Hi I wonder if anyone can help me. I have been researching my family history for some time and have done quite well but have a question I cannot find the answer to.
My grandfather was born in 1914 in the Union house, Alton street, Ross (I now know this to be the workhouse), his name was Percy Desmond Davies and his mothers name was Lily May Davies from Forge Row, Lydbrook. They must have stayed there for at least 1 month as he was baptised a month after his birth in Ross, but his later childhood was spent in Lydbrook living with his mum and grandparents and various other family members.
His mother had married in 1905, to a man named Ebenezer Davies (ebenezer was origionally from the Little Birch/Pencoyd area but moved to the forest after his father died and his mother remarried a man named cooper), Lily and Ebenezer had their 1st child (Violet May) in 1905 but soon after (according to an elderly relative)Lilys father brought her home as Ebenezer did not treat Lily well.
In 1913, although now separated from her husband Lily had a 2nd daughter Doris Irene (I have her birth certificate, no fathers name is listed), as I said my grandfather Percy was born the year after (again no fathers name on his birth certificate).
The elderly relative I mentioned before was a cousin of my grandfather and she was born in 1921, but has no memory of a Doris irene, although she was close to my grandfather and his family.
When Ebenezer and Lily married the witnesses at their wedding were George Hussey (lilys brother) and Anitta Davies (Ebenezers sister), George and Anita went on to marry themselves and in 1911 they had a daughter Doris Irene who died aged 7 months.
My grandfather died in 1965 so I never knew him and his mother Lily died in 1950 so my own mother remembers very little as she was only 6 when they stopped visiting Lydbrook.
My grandfather married a Pearl Adams from cawdor Villas, Ross, and as my grandmother remarried after Percys death we never really spoke about the family history of my origional grandfather Percy.
Lily May apparently worked in the laundry as a young woman at Courtfild.
I would be grateful for any information anyone can give me on where Lily was buried, any information on Doris Irene as I can find no death for her as a child and was wondering about adoption?, and anything else anyone may know about the family.
Thankyou for any help.

Thanks for that but have already checked out that possibility (ordered certificates etc) but it doesn't check out as on marriage certificate the doris who marries louis is doris ivy. I also have a death certificate for a Doris Irene bennett but the date and place of birth is wrong.
Thanks anyway

yes undoubtedly cousins, think there must have been quite a few Husseys in the forest although I thought it to be an unusual surname.
Have discovered another mystery whilst using this site. William Hussey (b 1829 approx) marries Emily Mayo in 1852. Williams father and mother were john hussey and sarah? - I cannot find a marriage for these 2 so its possible they neer married, think johns parents were joseph and mary mayberry but I am stuck on who sarah could be, any ideas?
thanks Virginia

No - His mother is Sarah HUSSEY, he gives his father as Richard HODGES on his marriage register entry

he was born just before she married Richard HODGES in 1830...

So in your experiance would he have been a hodges but couldn't be registered as one as they weren't married or more likely to have had a completely different dad.
Before finding this site I got much of my pre 1837 info from the IGI site so its obviously not all correct!
with grateful thanks Virginia

Unless something else comes to light I have him down as :-

William HUSSEY ( also known as HODGES) son of Sarah HUSSEY and Richard HODGES , born circa 1829 parents married Goodrich 1830

his siblings are baptised in Ruardean :-

1831 HODGES Mary Ann Richard Sarah Lidbrook [Lydbrook] [not stated] Ruardean
1835 HODGES Thomas Richard Sarah Lydbrook Collier Ruardean
1837 HODGES James Richard Sarah Lidbrook [Lydbrook] Forgeman Ruardean
1839 HODGES Jonathan Richard Sarah Lydbrook Forge man Ruardean
1841 HODGES Jane Richard Sarah Morewood Waterman Ruardean
