Thank you 'danold', something to add to my 'To Do' list. I'd like to see if "Geo. Gwilliam of Shortstanding, West Dean, 1853, with residuary account, 1853" is the same George who I hesitantly (based on Census' of Pennnsylvania and Monmouthshire))think is the father of George Gwilliam b.1835, who emigrated on the 'City of Manchester' from Liverpool to the west side of Pittsburgh in 1870 with his wife Eliza b.18?? and his first 3 children Shadrach (Shadwick), George (#3!) and Elizabeth. He would work at the Idlewood Coal Mine in Chartiers on the NW slope of Mt Washington next to the city. Born at Idlewood's Mining town were Emma, Eliza, Annie & John. Emma is my g-grandmother, who married Joseph F. Hawkins of Chesterfield MD.

The so-called 'manifest' for 'The City of Manchester' was a ruled pad of paper that listed EVERYONE in steerage as Irish coming from Ireland! I imagine someone at port was having problems with a Gaelic brogue!

Back to the point, I hope the will can clarify some family members and locations. I think one of the son's is also TIMOTHY GWILLIAM, who also moved to the same area of Pittsburgh about the same time.

Pte Fred GWILLIAM - WW1 soldier Glosters

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Wednesday, December 31, 2014, 22:05 (3683 days ago) @ m p griffiths

I've just belatedly spotted a WW1 War Medal on a wellknown auction site, listed by a Gloucester gentleman.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/381099434839?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK...

The medal was awarded to Pte Fred Gwilliam Service Number 12976 of the 9th (Service Battalion) Glosters. I found this auction while browsing for general "Dean Forest" items, I've no connections to the Gwilliam family and will not be bidding. I've mentioned this apparently reputable seller (Richards) in the past, selling Medals from the Goode family of Mitcheldean.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=43908

I hope this post might be seen by ancestors of Fred Gwilliam and, personal financial circumstances permitting, I'm a great believer that such items should be with the family rather than collectors if possible. Please be assured I am not the seller and have no connection with him whatsoever.

For an indication of Fred 12976's WW1 Service see http://www.wartimememoriesproject.com/greatwar/allied/gloucestershirergt9-gw.php

There are three entries for "F.Gwilliam"s within this website's WW1 Soldier Database, all in the Coleford area, I'm not 100% certain which applies to Fred 12976, perhaps this one ?

As in the past the medal's seller has helpfully provided some research & believes Fred 12976 was born abt 1888 to Benjamin & Sarah of Shortstanding, Coleford, the auction pages refers to the 1891 Census. I'm not certain he's correct as this website's PRs show a few possibilities including Alfreds etc, perhaps he's selling the medal on behalf of Fred's descendants ?. Assuming he is correct, then;

Pte Fred GWILLIAM, parents Benjamin & Sarah - cont'd

by shepway @, Thursday, January 01, 2015, 16:28 (3683 days ago) @ Jefff

Since Jefff’s posting and thanks to some research by David Drinkwater we have been able to establish that this Fred Gwilliam is in fact Alfred Oliver Gwilliam son of Oliver and Elizabeth Ann nee Powell. Thankfully his Attestation form which clearly gives his Service Number and also informs us of his next of kin is available on Ancestry and enabled us to provide a good match.

Alfred Oliver, who died in 1972, was a first cousin to my father and I was behind the camera that took the photograph that Jeff refers to. I just wish I knew then what I know now.

Thanks for your posting Mike and clarifying things, that's some good work by you and David !

Oddly enough the very first hit I found off this website, from the suggested 1888 birth date, was for an Alfred, yet the Medal seller seemed to have done his research so I didn't want to discount his beliefs. I did try to research the Military records on Ancestry but there were so many possibilities, hence my limited post. It didnt help me that even when searching his Army number I struggled to find the correct Medal Card on Ancestry.

Judging by the amount of Freds and Alfreds within the family, I'm a little surprised Alfred Oliver was known as Fred, rather than say Oliver, but not for me to query of course.
Main thing is the truth has come out, whuich us really great, and I do hope it's been of help. I only found the photo while "googling" the name, fancy you being the cameraman Mike !

Happy New Year to all Vurristers and Vurrinners by the way !

George Gwilliam 1807-1851

by shepway @, Sunday, October 30, 2011, 08:53 (4842 days ago) @ unknown

I have sent you a message via email system but so that others can benefit your George was the son of George born 1807 (baptism not found) and who married Elizabeth Adams on 24 May 1834 at Newland Parish Church. George Snr was killed in an accident at The Bush Pit on 10 February 1851 leaving Elizabeth with 6 children (2 having died in childhood). There is a headstone at Christchurch Churchyard and this is a transcript:
In/Memory of/ George Gwilliam/ died Feb 10 1851/ aged 42 years/ Also of Elizabeth his wife/ died April 9 1869/ aged 58 years/ Also of their children/ Mary Ann/ died March 15 1841/ aged 3 years/ Catherine/ died March 1844/ aged 4 months Edwin / died Oct 10 1855/ aged 3 years
George born 1835 was the eldest and married Eliza Williams at a Register Office in 1860.

Timothy was a first cousin to George Jnr. His father was Timothy born 1811 and this is his baptism:

Timothy married Eliza Gwilliam at Dixton Church, Monmouth on 22 March 1840. Eliza was baptised 22 August 1819 at Christchurch Parish Church and was the daughter of James Gwilliam and Eliza nee Ambrey.

George 1807-1851 and Timothy 1811-1885 had an elder brother Thomas 1798-1854 who was my g-g-grandfather.

Timothy and George GWILLIAM came to the US

by miss coco @, Monday, October 31, 2011, 15:29 (4841 days ago) @ unknown

In response to your inquiry, my great grandfather, Timothy Gwilliam came to the US with his first cousin, George. They did settle in Pennsylvania. Their fathers were brothers (the youngest children, I believe of Benjamin Gwilliam who was married to Catherine Delaney. I do have some family history on both cousins, Timothy and George. I would be happy to share this information with you and perhaps you can share additional information on the family.

Hello! My great-grandparents were Joseph F. Hawkins and Emma Gwilliam, who I believe were married on July 31, 1892 in Baltimore, Maryland, but who moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania sometime around 1901-1903. I believe this was the same Emma Gwilliam, who I believe was born on June 20, 1872 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I would be happy to receive any information about Emma Gwilliam and her family.

Emma Gwilliam b1872 (1880 US Census)

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Thursday, January 31, 2019, 15:56 (2192 days ago) @ MPGriffiths

Hi M,
I'd hoped to be able to help out with the U.S. Census info, as in the past I've found them available free-of-charge on the American FamilySearch website. However to my surprise, and despite thorough searching for various members of the Gwilliam family, and using various spellings of their surname including Gwellian, I can't seem to find them on FamilySearch at all !. I presume that site doesn't have this particular Census ?.

The only record I can find that MAY be relevant is the September 1918 U.S. Army Draft Registration card for a William George Gwilliam, aged 41, born April 10th 1877 and a "native born US citizen". His "nearest relative" is given as Sarah Gwilliam, presumably his wife. He is a "Mill worker" at the "Superior Mill, Ale, Pa."
Ale, Pa = Allegheny County, as per your findings. The county seat is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Superior Mill was a steel mill in a small borough of Pittsburgh named after Scotland's Andrew Carnegie who was a major player in Pittsburgh becoming one of America's major heavy industrial regions, especially for iron & steel-making. Also key to the town's early success were the immigrant iron workers who arrived in the 1830s from Merthyr Tydfil after the violent rising of that time in response to that area's depressed iron industry. The Wikipedia entry suggests they were demonstrating against Merthyr's major ironmaster William Crawshay II (a well-known family name in the Forest of course), but in fact like many local employer's he'd supported their campaign for Reforms.

Nowadays the Superior brand-name still survives, but the industry is much-depressed as part of the so-called "Rust Belt". The old Superior Mill itself is now considered something of a wasteland as a result of it hot-rolling large amounts of uranium strip and slabs in the 1950s.

First of all my thanks to MPGriffiths for her contribution to this thread and as she has already indicated Emma's father was George Gwilliam who married Eliza Williams at a Register Office in early 1860. I will send for a copy of this for the detail.
George was the son of George Gwilliam who married Elizabeth Adams on 24 May 1834 at Newland Parish Church. Details in Parish Records on this website.
George Senior was killed in an accident at the Bush Pit on 10 February 1851 and there is a memorial at Christchurch Churchyard of which this is a transcript:
"In/Memory of/ George Gwilliam/ died Feb 10 1851/ aged 42 years/ Also of Elizabeth his wife/ died April 9 1869/ aged 58 years/ Also of their children/ Mary Ann/ died March 15 1841/ aged 3 years/ Catherine/ died March 1844/ aged 4 months Edwin / died Oct 10 1855/ aged 3 years"
There were 8 children from the marriage 2 of whom emigrated to the USA. George the oldest son with his wife and 3 children and a cousin Timothy. Details as follows:

Emigrated to Pennsylvania. Sailed on City of Manchester from Liverpool to New York arriving 19 April 1870
GUILLIAM GEORGE 35 M 19 Apr 1870
GUILLIAM GEORGE 2 M 19 Apr 1870

GUILLIAM ELIZA 28 F 19 Apr 1870
GUILLIAM ELIZA 1 F 19 Apr 1870
GUILLIAM TIMOTHY 27 M 19 Apr 1870

His brother Thomas emigrated earlier (date not known) and married Eleanor (known as Nellie) Adams as follows:
Name: Thomas Gwillian
Event Type: Marriage
Event Date: 25 Oct 1870
Event Place: English Evangelical Luthern Church Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, United States
Gender: Male
Spouse's Name: Nellie Adams
Spouse's Gender: Female

There is a photograph of Thomas and Nellie on this website, the last photo on this webpage: https://forest-of-dean.net/joomla/index.php/christchurch
(There is a correction to be added to the information accompanying the photo - Nellie was born in the UK)

Both Thomas and Nellie died in Baltimore - Thomas on 6 February 1920 and Nellie 13 January 1926.

I have 7 children listed for George and Eliza:
Shadrach born 1860 in Forest of Dean (Shadrach is sometimes listed as Shadwick or Shad)
George born 1867 in Forest of Dean
Eliza born c1868 in Forest of Dean
Emma born c1872 in Pennsylvania
Eliza born c1874 in Pennsylvania
Annie born c1877 in Pennsylvania
John born c1880 in Pennsylvania.

You will find George in the 1900 Census at Anne Arundel County, Maryland with his daughter, Eliza and Son in law:
