Dorothy BAYLISS and her sister Elsie (General)
by thomasemma1, Tuesday, February 22, 2011, 09:33 (5092 days ago)
my grandmother was Dorothy Bayliss and her sister Elsie Bayliss. I have found through records that my Aunt Elsie married someone called George Powell in 1916 and went on to have children. I have spoken to my mum (Dorothy Thomas) and she can only remember Aunt Elsie looking after her father and did not know she was married. I can find the wedding but can find no trace after 1917 of George Powell. Can anyone help? Many thanks
Jennifer

thank you so much for this information, very kind of you. I just seemed to hit a brick wall as to how auntie elsie reverted to Bayliss from 1927 on when my mother was born. Just sorry I didn't get to meet their son George although have been to Lydney many times as my grandmother, uncle (also George strangely!) and aunt have their ashes scattered in the forest of dean.

A search of Monumental Inscriptions Index produced by GFHS indicates that George and Elsie are buried at Holy Trinity, Drybrook. There are 3 names on the Headstone as follows:
Surname Forename Burial Place Year Age Reference Number
POWELL ELSIE DRYBROOK:HLY_TTY 0032/00149
POWELL GEORGE DRYBROOK:HLY_TTY 1945 51 0032/00149
POWELL GEORGE DRYBROOK:HLY_TTY 1984 63 0032/00149
Unfortunately we do not have a year of death for Elsie.

Elsie Bayliss was my Grandmother and George Powell was my Grandfather. I never knew him because he died in 1945. Elsie (died 23/04/1989) and George (1894-1945) had 4 children, George 05/07/1919 - 01/04/84, Olive 1923 - 19/03/85, Kathleen 1925 - 25/10/93, and Cyril 17/03/1933. Cyril is my Dad and still alive and living in Tasmania with my Mum Angela (nee Phelps). I still live in Gloucester.

Dear Jennifer,
I am looking into the family of my gr grandmother, Eugenie Lewis. The line I have followed is from THOMAS, HOOPER then LEWIS.(i.e Frances Emma Lewis siter). Was your relative Dorothy married to a Norman or Douglas THOMAS ?
