Interesting thread....I have a branch of Preeces in Ruardean Hill 1820~1900.

This one is the son of Richard Preece. He married Mary Crocket in 1846 and died in 1877.

Miriam YORK - age 21, unmarried - Housekeeper, born West Dean
This one is the son of Robert Preece and Susannah Bailey. Recently widowed from Jemima. I never managed to identify any offspring for James/Jemima or his previous wife Mary? Presumably there are some if you are investigating him in detail?

I wondered if Robert and Richard are related as both are of similar age and moved to East Dean from Upton Bishop. Have you got any evidence for parentage of Robert? I'm directly descended from Richard.
