The Goode Family Mitcheldean area (General)

by anita @, Thursday, March 24, 2011, 18:10 (5061 days ago)

I have traced my back to George Goode, born in Mitcheldean 1st February 1929. He has an older brother James born in 1815 (whose grave is in Fownhope), brother Samuel born in 1820, Elizabeth Jane, Fanny born 1st April 1832 and have now found ancestors I believe could be brother and sister (Charlotte 1833 and William 1830).

I am totally stuck as on Parish Reoords George Goode's mother is names as Anne (record id 211, entry 210) but on Ancestry.co.uk only find reference to Hannah Goode. I cannot trace their marriage so cannot find out Anne or Hannah's maiden name and have been unable to go back any further than John (George's father) born approximately 1786).

There are many Goode families in the same area but I cannot link them into mine. Anyone researching the same with anything to help would be good. Thanks Anita

George J GOODE b1888 Mitcheldean, WW1 Soldier

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Saturday, April 26, 2014, 14:47 (3933 days ago) @ anita

Hi Anita,
I realise its a while since you've been on the forum, but hope you see this post. I haven't checked the lineage but I'm guessing from your thread that George John GOODE born Mitcheldean abt 1888 is one of your ancestors?
I thought you might like to know that the complete set of his WW1 Medals have just appeared on a wellknown online auction site being sold by a Gloucester gentleman. I only found that auction while browsing for general "Mitcheldean" items, I don't think I have any connections to the Goodes and will certainly not be bidding on these Medals. Of course the seller (Richards) may be known to you, or your relatives. However if not I thought you might like to know they are up for auction. Personal financial circumstances permitting, I'm a great believer that such items should be with the relevant family rather than collectors if possible, hence this post. Please be assured I am not the seller and have no connection with him whatsoever.

===============================================================================

George J Goode is included within this website's WW1 Soldier Database;

Record_ID: 1924
Year: 1915
Surname: GOODE
Forename: George John

If Dink or anyone else of this site's contributor's wish to search-out the above auction, they'll find it includes some usefull additional information abt Driver Goode's War Service which they might like to add to his records. As well as some good photos of the various Medals, it also includes a photo of his Medal Index Card, this appears to show that George J GOODE entered France 10 August 1914 as Driver No T-26269 within the Army Service Corp, and he later transferred to the Rifle Brigade, new No 6589. This is confirmed by TNA's Medal Card entry;

Reference:WO 372/8/57333
Description: Medal card of Goode, George J
Corps Regiment No: Rank
Army Service Corps: 1st Ammunition Reserve Depot T/26269 Driver
Rifle Brigade 6569 Driver

Also see http://www.1914-1918.net/asc.htm, which reminds us that

"The unsung heroes of the British army in the Great War - the ASC, Ally Sloper's Cavalry. Soldiers can not fight without food, equipment and ammunition. In the Great War, the vast majority of this tonnage, supplying a vast army on many fronts, was supplied from Britain. Using horsed and motor vehicles, railways and waterways, the ASC performed prodigious feats of logistics and were one of the great strengths of organisation by which the war was won."

I hope this is of interest to this forum. Please be reassured I have no connection with this auction or the seller whatsoever.

J.

PS. From this site's PRs I think this is him;

It's nice to see that George, despite being one of the "Old Contemptibles" who joined-up at the War's start, bravely survived what must have been a stressfull & dangerous War driving lorryloads of ammunition on far-from-smooth roads, yet still lived to a fine old age.

Thanks George.

RIP Lewis Stanley GOODE b1891 Mitcheldean, WW1 Soldier

I have just noticed that the abovementioned Gloster gentleman is also auctioning a set of WW1 medals for a Private Lewis Stanley GOODE. Again he has done a nice job of researching Lewis, even including a photo of his CWGC grave in Gloucester Old Cemetery. The seller helpfully advises that Lewis was born in Mitcheldean abt 1892 and was living in Barnwood Gloster in 1901. Following WW1 service in the 20th Hussars as an original "Old Contemptible", Lewis sadly died in Colchester Hospital on 31 March 1915. Being an important Army town I presume this was a Military Hospital. The auction page has more information and clear photos of this brave man's well-deserved Medals etc.
Given the circumstances it seems likely that Lewis was a relation to the aforementioned George John Goode, also from Mitcheldean. Searching this forum for Lewis confirms this, this prior thread most helpfully includes;

"1901 Census, Glos. Barnwood, District 11
Arthur BIRCHER - age 33, Builder Carpenter, born Glos Hucclescote
Elizabeth BIRCHER - age 29, born Mitcheldean
Children:
Ethel 5, Mabel 4, Fred A - 2 and Christopher age 1 (all born Barnwood)

plus (which turns out on the 1891 census to be Elizabeth's family)

George G GOODE - Boarder, age 13, Errand boy, born Mitcheldean
Lewis GOODE - age 9 ditto
Alfred E GOODE - age 7 - ditto"

http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=25529
This thread goes onto to confirm the Constance family link I mentioned in my post abt George Goode.

I cannot find Lewis within this site's PRs, but GlosBMD has;

Birth Details
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
GOODE Lewis Stanley GOODE GOODE CONSTANCE 1891 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 62 139

This link is for his CWGC entry
http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/358622/GOODE,%20LEWIS%20STANLEY

As yet Private Lewis Stanley GOODE is not included within this site's WW1 Soldiers database, not surprisingly given he moved out of the Forest while quite young, I'm sure that Dink and/or Martin will include him in due course.

R.I.P. Pte L.S.Goode, 4763 20th Hussars.

These websites about the 20th Hussars may be of interest, Colchester was indeed their home barracks. The unit, probably fighting in the trenches as dismounted Infantry by the time Lewis became a casualty, certainly saw some very stiff actions.

"First World War.
The regiment crossed to France on 17 August 1914 with a strength of 24 officers and 519 rank and file to join the rest of the "contemptible little army". The 20th Hussars formed part of the British cavalry that covered the gap between the British Expeditionary Force and the French 5th Army.

The regiment arguably took part in the first cavalry action of the First World War, and became involved in actions that were typical of the role played by cavalry in that conflict. The retreat from Mons, the battles of the Marne and the Aisne and the First battle of Ypres all saw the regiment involved and fighting as infantry from trenches in the Messines area."

Hi Sheila

Lewis Stanley GOODE is my 3rd cousin (3 times removed) I discovered, so there is a relation link. I was doing my family tree at the time I started posting on this forum over 11 years ago now and have completed it to a fair degree, but didn't realise that Constance Arabella had remarried. But I have got that Henry (Lewis's father) died in 1904. It all adds up. My dad's mum was Emily Goode, obviously a cousin too.
