Lydney burials (General)

by Rosemarie @, Sunday, April 03, 2011, 16:32 (5052 days ago)

Hi
I wonder if anyone can tell me how i find out where some of my ancesters are buried in Lydney churchyard. I have looked several times, found a couple, but some are just too hard to find. Is there a list somewhere?
Thanks
Rosemarie

A couple of observations :-
not all burials had headstones
headstones can deteriorate over time

it can make tracking down final resting places very challenging :-(

Rosemarie - if by any chance you are looking for the surname Sterry or Sterrey, I have a list, confined to those. I got it from someone who I think said he had tapped the local Women's Institute as they had been indexing the graves, but this was 4 years ago and my memory could easily be at fault. If you are looking for other surnames, the parish records section of this site should help, as you need only search a surname plus naming the parish, although it won't tell you whether there's a stone to read.

Joanne - you'll be lucky to find much if you try to peek in some parts of the old graveyard. Have you tried wading into that conservation area?!

Hi
Unfortunately no Sterrys in my tree.
We walked up to the churchyard today, first time this year and although not so overgrown, you are right
many are impossible to read or missing.
Thanks anyway

I dont know if there is a list but like you have, I was thinking about taking a walk round the churchyard. It's the only place I get any peace and quiet!!!

Hi jo
Yes we go quite often in the summer, really peaceful, but i wish I could find who I am looking for. I have even lost my great uncle who was there a couple of years ago (new grave yard, and I even have a photo of the stone), but i just couldn't find it this week. I will try again next time.

The Monumental Inscript
ions for Lydney have recently been transcribed: see the Gloucestershire Family History Society website where details of how the CD can be purchased can be found.

I purchased a copy of the Lydney Memorial Inscriptions last year from the Glos FHS. It is excellent & contains a churchyard plan with all the graves numbered. So even if you cannot read the worn inscriptions from the original headstones etc at least you can find them via the number lists.

Thankyou VERY much for alerting me to the selling of the transcriptions! I've been into that churchyard a few times trying to find my great grandfather but I've either run out of time, got lost in where I've looked, or been rained out! Hopefully this will help!!

Hi
I have a quick question about the maps of the graveyard on the CD. Does it show the location of all plots, even those without a headstone?
I am trying to locate the plot of my great grandparents and wondered if this cd would provide some help.
Thanks
Marianne

Hi
Yes it does show the plots, we have just come back from there and found the plot of one of my relations with no head stone, it is a bit tricky working it out, as the map isn't very clear.
If you want me to .ook someone up let me know.
