Following a lead from another Watkins thread I have been having a look at the Watkins web site and very interesting it is. It has clarified a number of my Watkins entries, primarily place of birth.

I have however a query regarding the entry for John Watkins 1810 who married Comfort Cole 1807. I had his baptism in my tree as 18 April 1813 Upon Bishop, parents James Watkins Shoe Maker & Sarah. The 1851 Census does indeed show him as a Shoe Maker :

1841 Census Turners Tump
James Walkins abt 1786 Ruardean, Shoe Maker
Sarah Walkins abt 1781 Ruardean,
Edmun Walkins abt 1821 Ruardean,
Philip Walkins abt 1826 Ruardean,

1851 Census Ruardean
( next door to Thomas COLE, from Welsh Bicknor - brother of Comfort Cole)
James Watkins abt 1784 Ruardean, Head Cordwainer
Sarah Watkins abt 1781 Ruardean, Wife
Phillip Watkins abt 1822 Ruardean, Son

On your web site you are showing the 20 Apr 1810 Upton Bishop Baptism for John Watkins, parents James Watkins & Sarah.

I cannot find a burial between 1810 & 1813 that is appropriate.

Can you advise which is correct.

Jim

Have you inadvertently been searching the burials instead of baptisms?

There are two baptism entries in the Upton Bishop Registers for John WATKINS, one in 1810 and the other 1813. Both are correctly transcribed as I have viewed the photo images taken of the Parish Registers.

Possibly the reason for the two entries is that the 1810 baptism of John was a private baptism as you will notice there is no ministers name recorded.

On the same day of the 1813 entry of the baptism of John his sister Elizabeth was also baptised. This is why I believe the first baptism of John was private and then at the baptism of Elizabeth it was decided that John was also officially baptised in the church at the same time.
