Thank's for that Jefff. I'll give it ago later in the week. While I have been compiling this a message has come in from Sue so presumably she will pick this up.
I have already noticed that you seem very helpfull and knowledgeable; and can't help wondering that if you're a Forester why I have not come across you before? I'm pretty active up there myself trying to preserve our right's etc. but I seem to be most famously known for successfully taking the Deputy Gaveller to Glos Crown Court to become a freeminer. I won't go into it anymore here but it didn't go down too well with some of the traditionalists and I still get the occasional flack about it even now!!!
I was particularly interested to read the Teague / Marfell threads. My great grand parents on my mother's side were William and Hannah Martin (ne Teague). I've got Hannah's Bible; Their son William (my great uncle)was killed at Union. Hannah decends from Industrial George and I think william decends from his mining partner ? Martin - I have his first name and the the name of the Mine but can't put my hand on it right now - I did the reaserch some while ago but never succeded in making the final link as I recal; but in the process I found Teagues all over the country and world - It must be one of the Largest extended Forest families ever; and the thought has often occurred why not follow the Burgham's and organise one gigantic reunion?
I begun my working career at Drybrook working for builders, Powell Bros. - Joe and Bert; and the Marfell name quickly became known to me as one of the more important local (Drybrook) families. Later on C 1969 - 71 I worked for RM Douglas on the Ranks site where I became involved with and got to know Basil Marfell of WF Giles Ltd.
The Burgham thread is also interesting - I am in touch with Brian - he first came to see me quite some time back with some Americans; and again just a few weeks ago; and I have since sent him some stuff and answered a few questions for him. Our house is based on the row of cottages that used to be Foundry Cottages - 4 of them; on part of the site of the Upper Furness / Foundry and later Forge run by Thomas Burgham. I knocked the cottages about and extended them into one house but retained the old name; so we own a substantial part of the old furnace site including the Mill Pond which I have more recently dug out and restored. There's much much more for instance I also bought the Lowere Redbrook Tinplate Works. I ran my own mining & civil engineering business there for some time then got permission to develop and demolishid the old buildings between C 1988/90. Im still building there now. It was ownership of these two sites that got me interested and of course being a member of the Teague family helped - The Teagues were strongly connected with both these sites (e.g. founder members and principle users of the Tramway and suppliers of coal); and Redbrook Trow Builder John Hudson married Peter Teague's daughter Elizibeth (this is off the top of my head without checking so I hope Ive got the connections in order?).
As you can see I could go on and on; so I'm very glad to have found this site; but it's time consuming as I'm sure you know? And whether I can devote enough to do justice - I'm not quite certain but I shall certainly make a point of trying to keep up at every opportinity I can find
Appologies for such a lengthly introduction - I did note the rules and will endevour to keep it short and sweet from here on
Best Regards
Mike J

There are no rules about how much you write about your life and experiences in the Forest as it all makes very interesting reading and I hope you tell us more.
It is nice for us to research and gather names and dates of our ancestors but I believe the real pleasure we receive is knowing what kind of work they did and what kind of life they lived in their day as it was much different than it is now.
Have a Nice Day!

Thanks for that David I obviously read it wrong.
Where I indicate time is premium - that is a general statement; but I've been laid low since last October with Shingles in the leg which apparently is a very rare place to get it and perhaps just as well - I wouldn't wish it on anyone - it practically took out the nerve ends of every mucle and for quite some time I was virtually like a jelly fish. It's starting to come back now - hopefully completely fingers crossed; so I do actually have more time to spare at the minute than usual, and will try to participate and contribute where and what I can. In fact as I write this I see somethings come in from Maurice Teague - the way it's going it might be hard to keep up for a while!!!
Not got far enough into your site yet so some things may be already covered. E.G. we have a organisation here called Dean Forest Voice (DFV) www.deanforestvoice.org (sorry haven't worked out how to insert live link yet - can't seem to get the button on the right to do what I want??) this link will tell you quite a bit about whats gone and going on more recently - I don't like rattling my own cage that much but I was largely responsible for it. I organised a meeting of Commoners, Freeminers, and other grass root Foresters at the Miners Welfare Hall at Cinderford to introduce a Gov. Countryside Agency Officer called Val Kirby - Val - lovely lady - and her small team came here to carry out a social experiment called Intergrated Rural Development (IRD). Shortly after the meeting had been publicised foot & mouth broke out but sanatisation procedures were quickly organised and we went on with it. The Hall was packed and the atmosphere superb; and out of it came the suggestion to set up DFV initially to work with Val K who coincidentally had spent much of her time working in NewZealand.
As it happened a film crew were here filming for the Forestry Commission and they filmed the entire proceedings which they kindly gave me a tape of.
This is one incident of a much larger event which I suspect is well remembered by most Forest posters when a Group called Action Against Quarrying (AAQ) got jittery and claimed that virtually the entire South Forest area was under threat of large scale quarrying and began a campaign to give the Forest a Special Status. It coincided with a general election which brought a Government Minister here called Frank Dobson and he cottoned on and promised them the earth!! which actually a lot of us knew wasn't deliverable. Nevertheless AAQ presurised local MP of the day Dian Organ for Dobson to keep his word and consequently she attempted to drive their agenda with an Early Day Motion that failed - if truth is known she didn't have much option with AAQ so heavilly on her back. Anyway I then got word of a exercise going on where a Consultancy called LUC was engaged in a 'workshop' project in front specially selected audiences to look at various other alternatives which could have seriously damage our ancient mining and quarrying rights, not least because they were largely a bunch of kneejurking Nimmbies from posher parts. Previous to this I had been actively countering AAQ in the local press (The Forester; Wye Valley Review and so on.). Anyway Dian Organ recommended I go along to one of these sessions to see for myself; but when I got there they wouln't let me in; so I gate crashed and quickly established that out of eighty odd people in the room there weren't many I knew. So on that I asked the Chairman (Stephen Wright) to let me speak and I simply said that appart from one or two I didn't see many Foresters hyere and on that Dr Camp's wife Gill jumped up and said well lets have a show of hands and the result was 6 of um!! The room fell silent. Then I proposed that the proper contributors lay out side the room and the meeting broke up; I didn't hear of another; and inj next to no time the Countryside Agency came here with their IRD which was brilliant because one of the earliest coonclusions they came up with was that the Forest has two distinctive Unique Lanscapes - One Scenic and the other Cultural and it's the latter of these that DFV are working to keep alive and well.
Anyone wanting to find more about some of the things I get up to - try searching 'Vurrister' on Google and you might come across some of the evidence doc's etc. that I do now and then to Gov. Select Committees - Local Councils and the like. - Not sure what's out there right now - it seems to change - but there's often something or other. - Most recently I have responded to The Local Planning Framework Core Strategy Doc.; and right now I'm working on similar objections to a scheme out to consultation now called the 'The Northern Quarter' near Cinderford which aims to develop and take out over 100 acres of Forest Waste (Waste is legal term for all Statutory Forest land irrespective of tree cover not legally enclosed by the Enclosures Acts 1667 and 1808).
Hope someone finds this interesting.
Incidentally; The next meeting of DFV will be Monday 6th June 2011 at the Royal Foresters Mile End at 7.30p.m - Everybody welcome
Best regards

Ow bist ole butt.
I am a direct descendant of George Teague [one of the Industrial Teagues of the Forest]And would be interested to have some dates and details of the Hannah Martin nee Teague you refer to.My family tree records are quite extensive but I have not got a recording of this Teague and wonder how I have missed her so dates etc will help me to cross check for her position in my tree.
Hoping to hear from you.

By the zize o' thye tree not za good as thow o'll butty. I'd be interested in seeing?
The research I did was not long after Anstis book came out so I need to do some file diving first and I'm not very mobile right now so might take a few days or so but I will get back to you with it.
In the meantime: Unfortunately GGM Hannah's bible only contains details from her siblings down. No body ever seems to have understood why? But if it is of any help her Bible carries the date 1872 and her first born William Junior was born 2nd October 1875 - she had three others over 11 years and she died not many years after her eldest got drowned at Union. Strangely enough her death is not recorded, nor either of the Williams so there's another family mystery that was never unravelled. According to the newspaper report of his death (not funeral) GGF William Martin presided over the Freeminers Association and was also a member of the Coleford Urban District Council whicd was the first Council to be formed in the Forest C 1895 - 1918 I have never bothered to follow any of this through in detail - the fact that he was has always been good enough; and there has always been more important things; he was 68 when he died and lived alone, - collapsed suddenly; was a Forestry worker at the time; and owned the Berry Hill shop. Hannah died not many years after William Junior was killed at Union; broke her heart it was said - probably understandable when you read the reports. Hannah and William are burried at Christchurch between William Junior on one side and Herbert Gwatkin (one of the other casualties) on the other. Not sure if any of this is relevant to your interest but i thought I'd set it down just the same?
One point of curiosity is the dificulty some posters to the Teague / Marfell thread seemed to have as a reult that many couldn't write (the decendents not the researchers). But the Industrial Teagues decendants that I found almost invariably wrote in similar beautiful style. This soon became a quick sifting factor for trawling the microfiches. I took more care where the writing matched; which I initially took as a first indication of the same family - GGM Hannas' writing in her bible is in the same style. Would be interested to know if you or any others experienced anything similar. I'm talking here about direct decendents of.
Nice to hear from you will be back again shortly.
Best regards

Hi Mike & Maurice
The names Teague & Marfell caught my eye as I have 50 Teague's in my family and my main interest is the Marfell family of which I have 1468. I struggled however to
find specifics. However I do have a George Teague 1753 who married a Hannah Martin as below :

There is a baptism for a George Teague 16 Dec 1753 Ruardean to a James & Hannah, but the spelling is Teauge.
My interest in this George Teague & Hannah nee Martin is that their daughter Ann 1781/1872 married my 5 times Great Uncle Moses Marfell 1774/1861. Moses Marfell 1774 and Ann nee Teague had a son Edmund 1800 who married Anne Burdock 1804, they had 6 children including Hiram born 15 March 1838 - see below for details of Hiram. Detailed below are my notes for Moses Marfell where you will see that the memorial inscription was wrong.

Moses Marfell, Batchelor and Ann Teague, Spinster both on the Hundred of St Briavel's were married in this Church by Banns this 19th day of August in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety-nine by me R. Gibson, Vicar
This marriage was solemnized between us (both signed)
In the presence of John Marfell Tho's Bond
Memorial Inscription ;
(north) In memory of Moses MARFELL who died Feb 28 1861 aged 87 years. Also Ann his wife who died May 25 1872, aged 91 years.
(west) Also Mary Ann daughter of Edmund and Ann MARFELL of Drybrook who died Jan 3?rd 1880 aged 72 years. Also Ann his wife who died Oct 19 1871 aged 67 years.
(east) Also Lydia daughter of Edmund and Ann MARFELL who died June 18th 1868,25 years.
Mary Ann was born in 1835 - she could not have been the child of Edmund & Ann she would have been born in 1808. It quotes her parents as Edmund & Ann, who married in 1833. Mary Ann was born in 1835, her mother Ann was born in 1804. The death date quoted is that of Edmund Marfell.
Notes for Hiram Marfell 1838 :
2 Birth Certificates - I have both. Birth registered twice at Ross & Westbury.
1870 Emigrated to USA. Working as labourer in Denver 1876. 1880 Census Denver.1900 US Census shown as Widower, retired Mine owner.
1884 - in a civil case "Union Pacific Railway versus McDONALD", the Jackson,
Marfell & Mitchell mines Erie, Co. are referred to -In Union Pacific Railway versus GOODRIDGE the company Goodridge & Marfell is mentioned as sueing the railway for fixing rates on hauling coal.
I have a lengthy document regarding Hiram Marfell and his sueing the Union Pacific Railway, but it is written by him and therefore needs a few morsels of salt.
In Erie, Colorado there is a Marfell Street.
I tend to follow siblings & parents of spouses and follow those lines - sometimes too far. I have a Maurice Teague in my Family Tree whose great grandfather George Teague 1854 married Emma Powell 1850. They are only in my tree as George Teague & Emma's son William George Teague 1872 married Alice Abiah Simmonds 1876. Alice Abiah had a sister Julia Hannah Simmonds born 23.4.1876 who married my 7th cousin twice removed William Tippins born 7.1.1858.
If this is your line Maurice, is there a connection between George Teague 1854 and George Teague 1753 ?

Regarding my own question concerning a link from George Martin 1753 & Hannah Martin 1753 to George Teague 1854, it could be George Teague 1753 & Hannah Martin to son Cornelius 1785 & Sarah Harris to son George 1824 & Mary Ann 1821 to son George 1854.

Hi there Mike and Jim
I concur with most of your posting but deviate slightly from some connections. My tree is as follows from Industrial George onwards.
George 1753-1819 married Hannah Martin 1753-1815 on 14-7-1776 they had 8 children as follows
Sarah 1777-1815
Ann 1781-1872 married Moses Marfell 1774-1861 [son Edmund 1800-1880]
Lucy 1782-1831
Cornelius 1785-1844
Abiah 1788-1876
George 1790 1807 Killed in pit accident
James 1792-1835
Edward 1794-1859 married Ann Tingle 1801-1872 [my gg grandparents]who were most productive having 12 children
James,Elijah Edward,Jane,Ann Abiah,Henrietta,Mary Elizabeth,Thomas Edward,GEORGE,Emily,and Sarah [twins],Cornelius,,Martin.
George 1836-1894 married Jane Tingle in 1867 [My g grandparents]
They had 6 children Elizabeth E Annie,Elizabeth Jane,Mary Tingle Teague,Martin Obed,William George,Mary Tingle Teague,The 2 Mary Tingles were the result of the first dieing in her 1st year 1872.
William George married Alice A Symonds in 1895,[my grandparents]
My father was their eldest son Geoge William John one of 8 children.
My parents had 4 children Beryl,John,Maurice [me] and Roger.Unfortunately Beryl died at 8 weeks old.
I can take my tree back 3 more generations but then hit a brickwall.
As you can see we connect at the Ann /Moses Marfell link but I still cannot find a Hannah Teague marrying a Martin.
Hope this helps.

Maurice
Thanks very much for the information. You are indeed the Maurice Teague in my family tree, but unfortunately we are not related, but connected - as far as I know at this moment. My connection here as I have said is that Alice Abiah Simmonds 1876 who married your grandfather William George Teague is the sister of Julia Hannah Simmonds 23 Apr 1866 who married my 7th cousin twice removed William Tippins 9 Jan 1858. A descendant of William & Julia is a key player in the Forest of Dean web site. William & Julia's daughter Mabel Claudine 20 Jan 1902 married my 1st cousin twice removed Kenneth John Stephens 25 Jan 1900, son of Jonah Stephens 23 Jan 1855 & Rosanna Marfell 8 Jan 1858.
Moving on, there is another possibility of finding a relationship :
As you know Ann Teague 1781 married my 5 times Great Uncle Moses Marfell 1774.
The parents of Moses Marfell 1774 were my 5 times Great Grandparents John Marfell 1731 & Lucy Meek 1743. The parents of Lucy were George Meek 1714 & Margaret Teague 1718, who was the daughter of Edward Teague 1677 & Elinor Roberts 1676. Edward Teague 1677 was the son of Thomas Teague abt 1650 & Bridget. So I have a Teague who is one of my 8 times Great Grandparents.
Do these Teague's link with your researches ?

Martha 1712--
James 1715-1760 M Hannah HALE in 1747 See below for chidren.
Margaret 1718-1745? Married George Meek
Edward 1721-1756?
James and Hannah had 5 children
James 1750-1818 Industrial Teague
Edward 1752-1756
George 1753-1819 Industrial Teague
Thomas 1757-1812 " "
Hannah 1759-- ?
This leads to my earlier listing of my family tree
JIM
Yes I have Julia Simmonds as sister ofr Alice who married my Grandfather.Details of the Simmonds family were kindly supplied by Graham Davidson who has connections by marriage.
Further to our family tree discussions I have listed above the earlier parts some of which are difficult to substantiate with paperwork.
Regarding George Teague 1854,this is possibly correct.Cornelius eldest son of Industrial George married Sarah Harris at Abenhall in 1821 and I have two children for them George 1824-1912 and Hannah ???.This George married Mary Ann in 1844 and possibly a second wife in 1880.I have not followed the line this far,as my more immediate line took priority. You have made my detctive instincts become aroused as George 1854 may well be in this line.

Ouch!! Seem to have made a right monkey of that. - As I said - I'm not in to geneology at all so willingly accept that you can all run rings around me on this score.
But I'm not giving up quite yet.
I went to GRO by prior appointment shortly after the book came out. There were a lot of familiar sounding names and I wanted to check for any relationship. That was 20 years ago. My son accompanied me and we met a person who had helped Ralph Anstis; and at the end of the day we thoght we had come away with a link to Edward and Eleanor - through George. My son made notes which I know I will still have in my files because I don't throw anything like that away - trouble is the filling is in a state owing to a burst pipe last winter.
two point I remember well was the consistent quality of handwriting and the alternation of George and Thomas between the generations of the male line; and I have it in my head that it brought us finally to George?? Maurices post cast aspertions and now Gill; both of which are appreciated; as would any further info that might help
As to my William and Hannah; according to Hannah's bible entries they had four children - of which Gill has found the two eldest but the dates look in need of slight adjustment here and there. They are:
William George Martin - born Oct. 2nd 1875
Annie Martin - born August 16th 1879
Fanny Martin - born August 21st 1882
Oscar J Martin - born April 21st 1886
William was killed at Union
Annie was my Grandmother - maried Frank Jones - born July 15th 1875
Fanny - I rember having a pub in the Raurdean area
And Oscar as I reall had a pub somewhere around Longhope.
Hope this helps

Its interesting to see the note re confirming spelling of name, presumably this was the Minister's note ?. I suspect it has been misspelt as Hubert elsewhere though ?.
I've found a Baptism record dated 1886 Feb 22 for a Mary Teague, daughter of Hubert(Collier of Blaina, Monmouth) & Charlotte; is this the Hubert you also mention ?.

Ooops, didnt realise the significance of the 12 August birthdate for Eubert. Unless he's a twin which I doubt very much, he's one & the same as HUBERT Charles Teague of same birthdate on the related recent "Hubert Teague 1860" thread
