I may have found my missing Elizabeth, but I am unsure of it and hope someone might be able to help me sort this out.
Elizabeth was missing from the 1841 census, when her husband was living on Blakeney Hill with two of their children (Richard, 20 and Henry, 8). Until I received William's 1845 will, which shows her living, I had assumed she was deceased.
During the 1850s she owned three properties in the Blakeney area. An Elizabeth Clarke, of the correct age (my Elizabeth was baptised at Lydney in 1788, daughter of James and Margaret GRIFFITHS) is living in Eastgate Road in the City of Gloucester. She is a widow, living alone, and lists her occupation as "land and houses". This Elizabeth dies 29 May 1861 according to probate records. Executors were listed as two gentlemen, Thomas MEYLER of Somersetshire (an insurance agent from Bristol, and John Jackson. (There is a John Jackson, a farmer who owns 70 acres of land, living on Blakeney Hill on the 1851 census, but I don't know if this is the same person).
Anyone care to weigh in on this one? Sending for the will may be the solution, but York is not particularly user friendly regarding overseas payments, so that is not an option at the moment.

Don't know if these events are any help.

Thank you, Roger.
Thomas Bond was the Clerk, and therefore witnessed a great number of marriages.
At the moment I am focussing on where Elizabeth was, since I can't account for her in any of the usual places. She disappears from the Forest records after the birth of her youngest son in 1833 or so. I had assumed she passed away, however, she was alive in 1845 when her husband passed away.

I saw that and dismissed it as too early, but made note of it. I thought I would check later if this Elizabeth is an aunt of my Eliza. (She's not: Eliza's youngest Aunt -- Harriett -- was born in 1788). It might explain how she met her husband. He died between 1851 and 1855. Eliza remarries Henry Wood, son of Jacob Wood and Sarah nee Inman (married Awre, 1811). Henry and Eliza have four children, the eldest isn't inmcluded in the baptismal records, but Henry (1857), Sarah Elizabeth (1860) nd Harriett (1862) are.

Parish Chapel Blakeney
In her Aunt Harriett CLARKE's will (1854 I think) she is referred to as Eliza WOOD. Census information after 1861 shows her living in Blakeney Hill with her second husband, Henry WOOD and their four children.
The census for 1851 shows her living on Blakeney Hill with her mother, Elizabeth CLARKE, and at that time her name is listed as Eliza PUGH.
Henry WOOD was born in 1823. son of Jacob WOOD and Sarah INMAN, married Awre 1811.
I haven't been able to find any record of either of her marriages, or the death of Mr. Pugh, who remains nameless for the moment. Her eldest child does not appear on the baptismal records, however, the three youngest (Henry, Sarah Elizabeth and Harriett do.)
Jacob and Sarah WOOD baptised Henry twice, once at Blakeney Chapel and once at Newnham and Blakeney Tabernacle, so there is some history on non-conformism in the family. Additionally, Eliza's youngest brother was for some inexplicable reason buried at Blakeney Baptist (although he and his siblings were all christened at Blakeney Chapel.)
If anyone is able to help me with her marriage information, or anything regarding the mysterious Mr. PUGH I would appreciate it.
Thanks.
S.

I found Amphlis' birth registration, Westbury on Severn, AMJ 1855 (6a-189). It didn't appear under her full name with the search on ancestry but did appear when I searched for her forename only. I haven't found any record for her after the 1861 census.

Chidlren of William Clarke
by mrsbruso , Thursday, June 09, 2011, 02:30 (4992 days ago) @ slowhands
The youngest brother -- Charles George Goss/Cross{?) has been accounted for. Since he is not mentioned in his father's will, it is fairly safe to assume the "child of William Clarke" buried at Blakeney Baptist in 1837 is Charles . . .
Henry has been a bit of a challenge as well, but I think I've managed to find him in a few more census'. In 1841 he is eight, living with his father on Blakeney Hill. In 1851 he is living in Garndiffaith, Trevethin. (I should have looked their earlier, considering I knew that was where his brother Richard was living at the time.) In 1861 he is back on Blakeney Hill, age 36, living with his wife, Ellen. Haven't found a marriage for them, but she was born in Oldbury, Glos c. 1838. (Henry, born Blakeney Hill, 1831).
After that, I cannot find them. I have checked the death index, probate records (he inherited a messuage and orchard from his father, so one would think he would have left a will to be probated. I also checked emigration . . . No joy.
Ann, c. 1809, William Clarke's daugther with his first wife, Hanna Williams, died in 1812, as did Hanna. Their son Thomas, c.1806 also inherits from his father, but I have no leads on him at all, nor on William and Elizabeth Griffith's eldest son, William c. 1817, also in his father's will.
Ann, c 1818 marries Thomas Virgo 13 August 1838 in Newland; they had a large family they raised in Gibraltar, she was buried at Viney Hill 27 Feb 1895.
Richard c. 1820 we know about. I still haven't managed to find the four children he and Sarah Ann Vining had who did not survive to adulthood yet. If they were stillborn there might not have been a record . . . all I know is that in the 1911 census, when I would have thought Sarah Ann would have listed having 3 children born, she said she had 7 children in total, three of them living.
And Eliza has been a subject of this thread. So . . .of the eight children, I've lost Henry but had at least a few leads on him, but can't trace Thomas or William at all. The names are too common, and none of the contenders thus far have been a perfect fit.
I'm sure I've made some foolish mistake -- this site is a lot more user friendly than I find ancestry.uk -- on ancestry even when I think I've put in the same search terms I don't always get the same results. And sometimes a solid lead (Elizabeth in Thornbury comes to mind) but it doesn't make immediate sense to me and I discard it too early. Or potentially too early -- jury is still out on that one.
Chances are if we run them to earth they're not any further away than Yorkley or Viney Hill. Richard was living in Yorkley at the time his father's will was proved (1845-46). I think I've reached a dead end here, so if anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful. Again. Or is it still?

Thank you!!! I never would have seen that in a million years. First, I didn't even know that Henry/Henerey had a middle name. (James is his maternal grandfather.) And assuming I did find it, West Bromwich wouldn't have rung any bells.
It took me forever just to figure out that the relevent part of Blakeney, for registration districts and census tracts could be Newnham, Westbury on Severn, Awre, Blakeney, Blakeney Hill, Blakeney Woodside, East Dean or Extra-Parochial FOD. I am never going to get the hang of this.
The "James" part might be a big clue. I'll have another go at it tonight.
